Crafted Through Service, Strengthened by Learning: A 40-Year Journey in Hospitality

Hajah Mohideen, now in his 60s, has devoted more than 40 years to building his career in the hospitality industry—a journey born from challenging circumstances that ultimately led him to discover his true passion.

Things were not always smooth sailing in his teenage years, as financial difficulties at home compelled him to halt his education and start working to support himself. Armed with little more than grit and an unwavering determination to learn and grow, he began his career taking on entry-level roles in hotel operations, including concierge and admin assistant.

From the very beginning, Hajah recognised that upskilling was key to advancing his career and standing out as a Stewarding Manager in the hospitality industry. Over the years, he honed his skills through on-the-job experience and training programmes. As the industry evolved, he saw the growing importance of sustainability in hotel operations and decided to enrol in the Zero Waste Manager course at NTUC LearningHub to stay relevant and continue adding value at work.

Through the programme, Hajah built a strong foundation in sustainability principles that he could apply to his daily work. The course deepened his understanding of practices that help organisations meet Singapore’s environmental and waste management requirements and standards, including embedding the 3R principles of Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle into everyday operations. Beyond acquiring technical knowledge and clarifying concepts with industry-expert trainers, Hajah especially valued the opportunity to engage with fellow coursemates from diverse professional backgrounds during peer-sharing sessions, gaining fresh insights and perspectives along the way.

Building on what he learned from the course, Hajah now brings a sharper focus on sustainability to his workplace. He applies his skills across kitchen operations, waste management, and hygiene by introducing new initiatives to drive greater efficiency and environmental responsibility. For example, he helped his team find better ways to handle and reduce food waste. Hajah also encourages them to think about sustainability in their everyday work, creating a more mindful and responsible workplace. His upskilling journey has boosted his confidence and inspired greater sustainability awareness across his team.

Forging ahead, Hajah remains committed to lifelong learning and growth. He hopes to broaden his understanding of sustainability and stay attuned to emerging trends channelling this knowledge into his passion for giving back to the community through initiatives that create lasting impact.

For Hajah, the lesson is simple: “Learning doesn’t stop because of age—it’s what keeps you young at heart and ready for new challenges”.

Charging Ahead: A Technician’s Journey into the Future

Mohammed Hasyree, in his late 20s, has always had a passion for cars. As his father ran a car workshop, he was exposed to the trade from the age of 12. This early exposure led him to develop a deep fascination with how vehicles operate, and it came as no surprise that he eventually chose to obtain his NITEC qualification in Automotive Technology and pursue a career in the automotive industry. Being the youngest technician in most places he has worked at, others often doubted his abilities. However, Hasyree never let that discourage him. Instead, he focused on proving himself through his work, putting in the hard work to earn the respect of those around him.

His job scope has always primarily focused on internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles. However, as the automotive landscape began to evolve and electric vehicles (EVs) rose to prominence, Hasyree realised that he needed to future-proof his skills if he wanted to stay relevant in the industry. That was when he decided to take up the National EV Safety Specialist Certification (NESS) course from NTUC LearningHub.

The course served as an important bridge, smoothening what could have been a challenging transition into EV, by equipping him with theoretical and practical knowledge like safety procedures and system diagnostics. Moreover, in the fast-changing automotive industry where new technologies are always emerging, adaptability is critical. Through the course, he learnt to stay calm and focused even when tackling new challenges.  Guided by experienced trainers and surrounded by passionate classmates, Hasyree found himself being part of an inspiring community that motivated him to grow beyond his limits.

Today, Hasyree’s role as an automotive technician has grown well beyond his early beginnings to encompass both ICE and EV vehicles. From diagnosing faults to performing repairs and ensuring safety protocols, the strong foundation of hands-on skills he built during the course allows him to approach his everyday tasks with confidence. Once, when faced with an EV issue at work that left others puzzled, Hasyree stepped up, using the safety checks and systems analysis he learnt to successfully diagnose and repair the issue. Not only did it bolster his confidence in his capabilities, but it also defied others’ preconceptions about his abilities, proving to others that he could handle EVs just as well as traditional vehicles.

Hasyree’s dreams do not end here. With plans to enrol in more courses related to EVs and advanced diagnostics, he hopes to continue expanding his skill sets and progress to take on more responsibilities at the workplace. Just as how he strives to upgrade himself to stay ready for whatever changes the industry brings, Hasyree encourages everyone, regardless of the field they may be in, to dive in headfirst and do the same. “Don’t wait until change forces you to adapt—stay ahead of the curve.”

It’s Never Too Late: The Second Act in Helping Others

Prior to joining the healthcare sector, Jesser Png, in his early 50s, ran his own cake business for seven years, pouring his heart into serving the community through food. However, he could never shake the persistent feeling that he was meant to pursue something more purposeful with his life.

Things took a turn when his father’s health began to deteriorate, and Jesser found himself thrust into the role of caregiver, looking after his father at home and accompanying him on frequent hospital visits. This experience opened Jesser’s eyes to the dynamic healthcare sector, where he was inspired by the selfless compassion demonstrated by the professionals.

Jesser decided to take the bold step to transition into the healthcare sector. Despite feeling daunted by the prospect of starting anew at this stage in life, especially without prior experience, his once fleeting interest in the medical field has now grown into a genuine resolve.

His first foray into the healthcare sector was at a special needs centre, where he had the opportunity to assist in conducting therapy, igniting his interest in the area. While exploring options to deepen his skills, Jesser chanced upon the SkillsFuture Career Transition Programme (SCTP) Certificate in Therapy Support (Healthcare) offered by NTUC LearningHub and was immediately drawn to it. Beyond clinical competencies such as patient care, the course also equipped him with critical soft skills such as empathy and patience when interacting with patients.

Although the initial learning curve was steep, Jesser pushed through with the help of his trainers and coursemates, who fostered an encouraging learning environment. Gradually, he gained the competencies and confidence needed to close the gap, while also forging lifelong friendships along the way.

Upon completing the course, Jesser managed to leverage the skills learnt to secure a job as a therapy assistant. Now, he aids therapists in conducting sessions, documenting patient progress, maintaining therapy equipment and more. He came to realise that while hard skills were important, it was the human connection that truly made a difference in patients’ lives. He fondly remembers the patients who wanted to take pictures to commemorate their therapy sessions, and one who even brought a homemade cake as a token of appreciation.

However, this is still far from the end of his learning journey. Jesser's ultimate goal is to become a physiotherapist, helping patients get back on their feet following injury or illness. For him, age was never a barrier, rather, having the heart and passion to learn was what truly mattered on his journey. Today, he echoes the same advice to other learners who may be hesitant about taking that first step - “Never stop learning, no matter at what age.”

Investing in People: Beyond Financial Coaching

In her previous job as a financial consultant, Edwina Woo, in her late 30s, helped clients plan to reach their financial goals. However, she soon noticed many clients who, despite their financial means, faced significant challenges due to past experiences. Recognising that mindset issues could undermine even the best financial plans, Edwina was inspired to enrol in NTUC LearningHub’s Khrysalis Coaching Series programme to better support her clients.

The programme was a series of three modules, which gave Edwina the opportunity to learn from three seasoned trainers. Being practising coaches themselves, they provided her with insights into the practical aspects of a coaching, such as active listening and crafting insightful questions. The hands-on coaching practices with fellow coursemates further enriched her experience, as she applies the skills she learnt, like utilising questioning techniques to help coachees problem solve. Edwina shares that the programme has been one of the most memorable courses she had ever taken, as she came to realise how coaching can truly allow a person to develop to their full potential.

Upon completing the modules, she had to clock the required coaching hours to be eligible for the credential exam. With the help of trainers who created a platform for learners to practice peer coaching, and subsequently through leveraging her network to find a flexible coaching job, she managed to fulfil the total hours needed. Stepping out of her comfort zone was a significant challenge, but the nerves lessened with each coaching session, and eventually, Edwina found herself ready to sit for the required exam. Her hard work paid off and she was officially credentialled as an International Coaching Federation (ICF) Associate Certified Coach (ACC).

Imbued with confidence, she kickstarted her own financial wellness coaching business, merging her decade-long financial experience with her newfound coaching skills. Today, Edwina empowers others to take charge of their financial and personal well-being as a Financial Wellness Coach. Unlike simply following a structured process to help clients achieve a financial goal, as she did in financial consulting, her one-to-one sessions and specialised workshops focus more on the emotional and behavioural aspects of money.

Recalling a client whose anxiety about finances precluded him from financial planning altogether, Edwina shared that rather than starting with numbers as she might have done before, she utilised coaching techniques to create a safe space for him to work through his fears. Through small, manageable steps, he eventually gained the confidence to take control of his finances. As Edwina put it, “That shift didn’t just impact his money habits, it gave him back a sense of agency in his life.”

Even as she continues to grow her business, her thirst for learning is far from quenched, with plans to further her knowledge in areas like positive psychology. Ultimately, Edwina believes in one core principle: that lifelong learning is an attitude everyone should possess.

From Call Centre to Changemaker: How Agile Thinking Inspired a Career Shift

Previously a trainer at the Ministry of Health Crisis Management Contact Centre, Nabisah Mohamed played a key role in preparing employees to manage calls during the COVID-19 crisis. She was responsible for equipping call centre agents with the skills needed to handle high-pressure situations, ensuring they could provide accurate information and support to the public. Over time, she saw the need to expand her skill set to better mentor and guide her trainees.

To build these capabilities, she enrolled in the Professional Agile Coaching Programme at NTUC LearningHub, as she saw Agile coaching as a way to enhance team performance, personal development, and project management. The course equipped her with valuable technical and soft skills, including Agile principles, adaptability, and leadership. Beyond  theoretical knowledge, the NTUC LearningHub Agile trainers created an engaging and supportive learning environment with a hands-on approach that helped her apply these concepts with confidence. “The trainers were exceptional. They boosted my confidence in what I was learning in class and in applying it to my job,” she recalls.

Her newly acquired skills not only strengthened her ability to mentor but also broadened her perspective on how she could contribute beyond the workplace. She wanted to apply her expertise in a way that made a tangible difference in people’s lives. This led her to pivot to the social service sector, where she now works as a Corporate Outreach Executive at a non-profit organisation, managing projects across various pillars, including fundraising, partnerships, and business development. She attributes her ability to handle diverse responsibilities to the skills she gained through the course—particularly her adaptability and agility. The training also empowered her to share her expertise with younger professionals and community partners, reinforcing her passion for giving back.

Looking to the future, Nabisah aspires to step into a senior managerial role before retiring at 60, driven by her unwavering commitment to growth and self-improvement. Through her own journey, she has seen firsthand the power of continuous learning and encourages others to embrace the same mindset. For those considering reskilling or a career pivot, her advice is simple yet powerful: “Maintain a positive, resilient, and agile mindset. Be curious and committed to lifelong learning. Pursue what makes you feel alive and happy.” She believes that in today’s rapidly evolving world, staying relevant means continuously learning, unlearning, and relearning.

Turning Grief into Purpose: A Mid-Career Switch to Transform Lives

Noorunnisa D/O Abdullah Sahib Maricar, who is in her 40s and has previously worked in the customer service industry, felt a growing desire to embark on a new journey. She was motivated by a deepening sense of purpose and a strong aspiration to make a greater impact. Noorunnisa’s turning point came when she lost her sister-in-law to cancer. This heartbreaking experience was made even more difficult by the subsequent illnesses of other family members. Overwhelmed by grief, she began to reflect on health, recovery, and how she could make a difference in the lives of others facing similar struggles. Determined to understand the challenges encountered by those dealing with illness, Noorunnisa decided to pursue a career in healthcare as a way to aid in her own healing journey. “It’s not only therapeutic for the mind, but it’s also a wonderful feeling to help someone through a difficult time,” she shared.

This journey led her to discover the SkillsFuture Career Transition Programme (SCTP) Therapy Assistant Course at NTUC LearningHub. Before enrolling in the programme, Noorunnisa had a limited understanding of healthcare roles, viewing them as primarily comprising doctors and nurses. However, the course proved transformative. During her industrial attachment at a hospital, she acquired invaluable insights and real-life experiences in the healthcare sector. Complemented by immersive hands-on training and interactive role-play in the classroom, she gained a broader perspective on the critical roles of physiotherapy, speech therapy, and occupational therapy in patient recovery.

After completing the programme, she secured a job as a customer service advisor at a company specialising in rehabilitative aids. Subsequently, she transitioned to a role as a hospital-based therapy assistant, where she recognised the growing demand for physiotherapy and high-quality care. This progression encouraged her to think about new ways to make a meaningful impact in the lives of patients, ultimately leading her to launch her own telephysiotherapy business with a particular focus on supporting couples. “Couples often experience more stress, as both may be juggling work and raising children. I started Couple Sparkle with the idea of helping couples through physiotherapy and supporting their mental wellness,” she explained. Drawing on her physiotherapy knowledge and soft skills, such as empathy and change management, which she honed during the programme, Noorunnisa encourages her clients to stay active and fit.

Looking ahead, she plans to further her studies in physiotherapy to expand her business and make a greater difference in the lives of others. “It’s never too late, and you’re never too old to start something new,” she said. “In these changing times of technological advancement, upskilling is essential to staying relevant, especially in healthcare.”

Noorunnisa’s journey from grief to purpose exemplifies how continuous learning and a commitment to upskilling can transform lives—not only her own but also those of the people she touches through her work.

From HR to Healthcare: A Career Switch Fuelled by Passion

Kam Sok Cheng, in her 40s, spent over two decades building a career in human resources, working across diverse industries such as semiconductors, shipping, and food and beverages. However, the COVID-19 pandemic brought an unexpected challenge when she was retrenched. Rather than letting this setback define her, Sok Cheng saw it as an opportunity to explore her passion for healthcare, a field she had been drawn to through her volunteer work with the elderly.

Transitioning to a new career was not without its hurdles – Sok Cheng faced concerns about financial stability, and adapting to a completely different work environment. While she had already picked up basic caregiving skills from friends and fellow volunteers, she recognised that formal training was essential for making a professional transition into the healthcare sector. Determined to turn her aspirations into reality, she enrolled in the Healthcare Assistance Programme at NTUC LearningHub. The structured learning, combined with quality training and guidance from experienced trainers, equipped her with the confidence and skills needed to make a successful career switch. “The learning environment was wonderful. My classmates were incredibly supportive, and we often had group discussions and role-plays after class to reinforce what we had learnt and build strong connections,” says Sok Cheng.

Midway through, Sok Cheng took a 10-month sabbatical from the programme to care for her mother, who had been injured in an accident. Caring for her mother further deepened her passion and resolve for helping others, and she returned to complete the course with even greater determination.

Today, Sok Cheng is a care support associate at a specialist centre, assisting in nursing activities such as wound dressing, preparing patch test strips, and maintaining clinic equipment. She credits the programme not only for equipping her with technical skills but also for fostering essential soft skills, such as effective communication and empathy which have enriched both her professional role and her ability to care for her mother at home.

“Lifelong learning isn’t just about career advancement. It’s about staying curious and improving the quality of life for myself and those around me,” reflects Sok Cheng.

A Graduate’s Journey from Uncertainty to New Opportunities in Tech

Noor Mustikha Binte Noor Khalid, now in her mid-20s, had a strong passion for integrating technology and engineering. This drive led her to pursue a bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, specialising in Aeronautical Engineering, with the vision of building a career in the science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) field. However, when she graduated in 2021, a year after the pandemic hit, the economy had yet to fully recover, and the job market remained cautious.

Facing difficulties in securing a role in her desired field, Mustikha eventually accepted a position as a management associate in the social service sector. While she appreciated the opportunity, she knew it was not the right fit for her career ambitions. Despite having just graduated, she actively sought opportunities to enhance her skills to help her pivot into new fields. It was during this time that Mustikha discovered NTUC LearningHub’s SkillsFuture Career Transition Programme (SCTP) Associate Data Analyst programme while browsing Instagram. Drawn by her interest in technology and the rising importance of data, she saw the programme as a valuable opportunity to pivot towards the tech industry.

While learning new skills like Structured Query Language (SQL) and Python presented its challenges, her background enabled her to grasp these skills more readily. Additionally, the collaborative learning environment and knowledge-sharing with her peers enriched her experience and boosted her confidence to push through. She also appreciated how the programme seamlessly combined theoretical knowledge with practical application through capstone projects, which gave her hands-on experience in applying her new skills to real-world scenarios. "Beyond equipping me with the necessary competencies, the capstone projects provided tangible proof of my abilities, which is something highly valued by prospective employers,” says Mustikha.

She credits the programme for providing her with valuable skills and a strong portfolio from her capstone projects, which contributed to her securing a job as a Data and Knowledge Management Executive in the education sector. In this role, she applies the skills and tools she learned, including Power BI, to manage, analyse, and visualise data, delivering insights that support strategic decision-making.

Looking ahead, Mustikha is focused on expanding her expertise in data analytics and exploring new areas like robotic process automation, continuing to push the boundaries of her knowledge and career. To sceptics of lifelong learning, she uses the analogy of a smartphone: “Your phone software and apps require regular updates to fix bugs, and these updates protect your phone from malicious vulnerabilities in data privacy and security. Similarly, lifelong learning bridges gaps in skill sets and competencies and strengthens your personal well-being and your relevance in employment.”

From Print to Possibilities: Anticipating Change and Embracing New Beginnings

From a young age, Lingam Kumar’s curiosity about how things work, coupled with his technical education, fostered a deep appreciation for machinery. He enjoyed dismantling objects to understand their inner workings, engaging in a form of reverse engineering. This fuelled his love for technology and passion for machinery, ultimately guiding him into a successful career in the traditional print industry which has spanned over three decades. Now in his 50s, Lingam serves as a Team Senior Operation Printer and has witnessed the rise of digital media formats over the years. Recognising the evolving landscape, he knew it was time to pick up new skills to remain adaptable to changing times.

Lingam came across NTUC LearningHub and was intrigued by the variety of courses offered. He saw this as an opportunity to expand his skill sets, enrolling in courses that would prepare him for the dynamic job market. Upon further research, Lingam developed a keen interest in sustainability, especially in light of the Singapore Green Plan 2030. He recognised the increasing importance of sustainability in today’s economy and how it is now a driving force for innovation and growth across all industries. Consequently, he enrolled in the National Electric Vehicle Specialist Safety (NESS) programme with NTUC LearningHub.

The programme not only equipped him with valuable skills in electric vehicle (EV) maintenance and servicing, safety procedures, and the fundamentals of hybrid and EVs, but also allowed him to draw on his technical background and appreciation for machinery. Additionally, the programme provided a supportive and collaborative environment, with experienced trainers and a diverse group of trainees, which further enriched his learning experience. This helped Lingam clarify his vision for the future—one that aligns his affinity with technology while providing opportunities to adapt and embrace change. “It wasn’t just about learning new skills, it was about my commitment to continuous growth,” says Lingam.

With his new qualifications, Lingam is ready to take on new opportunities, whether contributing to sustainability efforts at his workplace or exploring other industries down the road. “Personally, I feel restless when I’m not learning or improving. The desire for growth keeps me moving forward, and every new skill gives me a renewed sense of purpose. I encourage others to do the same. As they say, the moment we stop learning is the moment we begin to fade away. The sky is the limit—lifelong learning keeps us engaged, energised, and ready for whatever comes next,” reflects Lingam.

Inspired by Those Who Cared for Her, She Embraced a New Career in Healthcare

Miyuki Leung, in her mid-20s, began her career working as a waitress at her family’s restaurant for two years. She eventually became a public servant, but soon realised that the role was not the right fit for her. This mismatch, coupled with the challenges brought on by the pandemic in 2020, took a toll on her well-being, eventually leading to hospitalisation and prompting her to leave the job. Yet, it was in that hospital that her life took an unexpected turn, as the compassionate care she received sparked a new calling within her. She recalls thinking, “I want to be like them”—to be the one providing comfort during someone’s most difficult moments.

Determined to bounce back after her recovery, Miyuki came across NTUC LearningHub’s Healthcare Assistant Programme during her job search. She saw it as a timely opportunity to explore a new career path and contribute to society at a time when healthcare workers were needed the most, at the height of the pandemic.

Delivered by veteran trainers with vast industry experience, the programme provided not only a safe and supportive environment but also technical knowledge and insights that enriched her learning. Miyuki particularly appreciated the diversity of her cohort, each bringing unique perspectives and experiences that were invaluable for building connections and learning.

Today, she thrives as an Emergency Department Healthcare Attendant, applying skills like therapeutic communication and basic care in her day-to-day work. These have become foundational to her role, shaping how she interacts with different patients. Beyond technical skills, the programme also strengthened her critical thinking and problem-solving abilities, which were once her weakest areas. She has since diversified her skill set and adapted to the fast-paced, ever-changing environment of the emerging care economy. Her commitment to continuous learning enables her to expand her knowledge and enhance the quality of care she provides.

For anyone feeling ‘too old’ or ‘too far behind’ to pursue a new career or embark on a learning journey, she offers this piece of advice: “We simply took the road less travelled, and we are exactly where we need to be to reach our fullest potential.” She encourages others to take the leap into lifelong learning, reminding them that one day they’ll look back and wonder why they ever hesitated.

Her own journey is far from over. She plans to enrol in the Institute of Technical Education (ITE) next year to pursue her goal of becoming an Enrolled Nurse, eager to continue making a difference in the lives of others. Her story is a testament to the power of learning and how it can transform not just careers, but lives. “As much as it helps you become an even better version of yourself, lifelong learning at its core is what creates the desire to live life on your own terms—that is what it means for me.”

Kopi with LHUBBERS – Leading with Heart: Building Singapore’s Healthcare Workforce, One Learner at a Time

A cup with Wee Chin Ning, Head of Healthcare Cluster, NTUC LearningHub

By Steven Lee, Brand & Communications, NTUC LearningHub

When you meet Chin Ning, Head of Healthcare Cluster at NTUC LearningHub (NTUC LHUB), the first thing that comes to mind is her upbeat energy and ready smile. But in this conversation, I got to see a different side of her—one that reveals the depth of her passion for people, learning, and the purpose that drives her every day.

Her professional journey has come full circle. In 2005, she joined NTUC LHUB as one of its earliest employees, at a time when the organisation was still finding its footing.

“I was employee number forty-seven!” she exclaims. “Back then, there was just a tiny counter, a sales team of two, and a small group of us who believed deeply that learning could change lives.”

Those formative years were grounded by possibilities and big dreams. “We were laying the foundation for something bigger: client relationships, training frameworks, industry networks,” she recalls. “It was lean, but exciting and fulfilling to watch something new take shape.”

After four years, curiosity led her elsewhere into the world of biotechnology.  She joined a company working on medical devices, including a transdermal patch designed for cancer patients. “I was involved in everything: product knowledge, compliance, market strategy,” she explains. “I worked closely with scientists and medical professionals and wore multiple hats there.”

A Return to Purpose

In 2019, while she was travelling across the region for work, a call from her former NTUC LHUB mentor changed everything.

“She told me there was a gap in the Healthcare Cluster, and asked if I would consider returning,” Chin Ning recalls. “She was a cancer survivor herself, so healthcare was deeply personal to her. Her conviction moved me.”

At the time, NTUC LHUB’s healthcare division was undergoing transition. “There was a leadership void and the team needed direction,” she says. “I knew it would be a challenge but I felt ready for it.”

For Chin Ning, coming back to NTUC LHUB wasn’t simply about career progression; it was about coming home to a purpose that aligned with her values. “When you find work that connects your head and your heart,” she says softly, “it feels less like a job and more like a calling.”

Her initial goal was pragmatic—to strengthen the business. But as she re-immersed herself, the mission quickly became larger: to cultivate the people who empower Singapore’s healthcare system.

Resilience in Crisis

That mission was soon tested in ways no one could have anticipated.

“When COVID hit, everything changed overnight,” she recalls. “Hospitals were full, manpower was in short supply, and the uncertainty was overwhelming.”

Her team immediately became part of the national response, working with the government to train support staff. “There were long hours, logistical hurdles, and constant pressure. But we knew the stakes—it was about life and death,” she remembers grimly.

However, those months remain etched in her memory. Eventually over 16,000 individuals were trained as Safe Management Officers to support Singapore’s safe reopening during COVID, and a five-day Basic Care Support Training was developed, equipping more than 4,000 Swabbers and Swabber Assistants for deployment at community and treatment facilities.

“It was exhausting, but also deeply moving,” she says. “I saw how training could save lives. It reminded me that education isn’t just about employability—it’s about resilience. Everyone played their part. We were proud to stand alongside Singapore’s healthcare community during that critical time.”

The experience also redefined leadership for her. “When you’re in a crisis, people don’t look for perfection. They look for steadiness instead. I learned that being calm and compassionate can sometimes be the most powerful thing you can do.”

Empowering Learners, Shaping the Future of Care

Today, Chin Ning leads a team that designs and delivers training programmes across the healthcare sector—from entry-level roles to advanced care management. Her mission is clear: to nurture professionals who are not only competent, but compassionate.

“We train everyone from new entrants to mid-career switchers,” she says. “Each learner has a story. Some want a fresh start; others want to give back. What unites them is a sense of purpose.”

She lights up when speaking about learners whose journeys she helped shape. “One of them, Shanice, came from an IT background and joined our SGUnited Skills programme for Health Coach and Community Care. She made a complete switch into healthcare, and now mentors others who are walking the same path back here at NTUC LHUB. Her courage inspires me and now she’s an integral part of our team, paying it forward.”

Stories like Shanice’s, she says, are the heart of her work. “When someone discovers their calling through learning—that’s the moment everything makes sense.”

Chin Ning believes the healthcare workforce of tomorrow must blend human empathy with technological fluency. “As AI and digital systems transform care delivery, we also train learners in technology—from data literacy to telehealth solutions— because the healthcare sector needs to be efficient and future-ready,” she explains. “But caring for real people will always require the human touch. Machines can support care, but they can never replace it.”

Leading with Heart, Learning for Life

To Chin Ning, lifelong learning is both a professional necessity and a personal philosophy. “The healthcare landscape is evolving rapidly,” she says. “Patients are more informed, technology is advancing, and expectations are higher. To keep pace, learning must be continuous.”

Her approach extends beyond skill-building to encompass preventive health and community well-being. “We often talk about lifespan, but what truly matters is health span: the years we live well,” she says. “That requires awareness, mindset, and daily habits. Training can influence all three.”

She champions initiatives in active ageing and community learning, believing that education keeps people socially and mentally engaged. “I’ve seen older adults flourish when they stay connected,” she shares. “Health is not only about the body; it’s also about belonging.”

Working in healthcare has also deepened her perspective on life. “When you see people at their most vulnerable, you begin to value things differently,” she reflects. “You learn patience. You learn gratitude. You realise progress isn’t always measured in numbers.”

Her advice to aspiring healthcare professionals is simple yet profound: “Use your head to make sound decisions but never forget to lead with your heart.”

Finding Joy Beyond Work

Outside of work, Chin Ning embodies the very lessons she advocates. She believes deeply in social prescribing: the idea that well-being is strengthened through purposeful activity and connection.

“I make time to travel,” she says, her expression softening. “Whenever possible, I bring my parents along. We explore new places together. It’s about creating memories and living without regrets.”

When she’s not travelling, she finds joy in the everyday—catching up with friends, walking in the park, or discovering new cafés. “It’s not about doing something grand,” she says. “It’s about staying engaged with life.”

To her, wellness is holistic—physical, emotional, and social. “Health isn’t just about diet or exercise,” she says. “It’s about having a sense of community, being able to talk, to laugh, to belong. That’s what keeps people well.”

Looking Ahead – Building a Healthier, More Inclusive Singapore

As she looks to the future, Chin Ning envisions NTUC LHUB continuing to play a pivotal role in shaping Singapore’s healthcare workforce. “We are preparing for an ageing population, digitalisation of care, and new expectations of service,” she says. “That means our training must evolve continuously.”

Her dream is to build a healthcare learning ecosystem where skills, empathy, and inclusion intersect. “We want every learner to see themselves as part of a bigger picture, contributing not only to the system, but to society.”

She believes the future of healthcare is collaborative. “It’s not just about hospitals or professionals. It’s about families, neighbours, and communities who look out for one another.”

“It’s never about one person. Everyone plays a part in building an inclusive, caring community,” she says with much conviction.

And her message to all learners, whether aspiring nurses, caregivers, or curious citizens is clear: “Be prepared for anything. Life is unpredictable. But when we learn together, we grow stronger together.”

Chin Ning’s words linger long after our conversation ended. It is a stark reminder that at the heart of every system, every skill, and every success, lies the simplest of human truths: the importance of care and concern for others.

Kopi with LHUBBERS – From Barracks to Boardrooms: Leading with Purpose, People and Perspective

A cup with Tay Ee Learn, Assistant Chief Executive and Chief Sector Skills Officer, NTUC LearningHub
By Steven Lee, Brand & Communications, NTUC LearningHub

What does it take to steer workforce transformation in an era marked by uncertainty and change? For Tay Ee Learn, Assistant Chief Executive and Chief Sector Skills Officer at NTUC LearningHub, the answer lies not merely in strategic foresight or business acumen, but in an enduring belief in people, purpose, and the quiet discipline of continuous learning.

From military barracks to corporate boardrooms, his journey traverses different terrains. Yet, what binds it together is not just a distinguished resume, but an unrelenting curiosity and a steadfast conviction that lifelong learning is not an aspiration, but something we can all strive towards.

When you think of a senior leader in a local training provider, you might expect someone methodical and perhaps a little distant—but meeting Ee Learn quickly dismisses that notion. His assured presence, shaped by years of leadership, is matched by an unmistakable ease in the way he speaks: witty and approachable.

“I was one of those playful students,” he says with a grin, when asked about his childhood. “Not exactly top of the class. But I always tried my best.”

In that humble moment, I realised—this is not a story of someone who always had a master plan, but of someone who kept showing up, learning, and never turning down a good challenge.

Lessons Beyond the Classroom
In revisiting his youth, Ee Learn paints a portrait that feels refreshingly candid and grounded.

He was, in his own words, “one of the boys who should have studied harder.” In school, he often found it difficult to focus on academics, more drawn to football and time with friends than to textbooks. “I was easily distracted, and definitely not at the top of the class,” he admits.

“Sometimes I scraped through, sometimes I fell short—but I always tried to give my best. I wasn’t failing badly, but I wasn’t excelling either,” he shrugged. “I was just coasting along.”

Yet, what stayed with him were the teachers who refused to give up on him. “I still remember one teacher pulling me aside and saying that I can do better if I just put my mind to it,” he says.

Those moments, though small, gave him confidence that he was capable of more than his report card suggested.

Interestingly, leadership was never the end goal during his early years. “Not really,” he admits with a smile. “I was more focused on being a team player and helping the team succeed, rather than the role I played.”

These early experiences laid the foundation for his lifelong belief that education is more than just the transfer of knowledge. It is about belief, opportunity, and unlocking human potential. That perspective would later become central to how he leads.

Leadership Forged in the Field

After his studies, Ee Learn signed on with the Singapore Armed Forces (SAF), beginning what would be a 20-year military career. There, he learned to lead not through authority alone, but through adaptability, empathy, and strategy. His perspective truly shifted.

“My outlook about growth and responsibility changed somewhat, as I was no longer just representing myself but that of the SAF—and even Singapore,” he reflects. That realisation pushed him to take his development seriously.

One mission in particular still stands out vividly in his memory. “When I was a young officer, my small team was attacked, and we lost all our equipment,” he recalls. “Our mission was critical to the success of the entire battalion, and I had to step up and find a way to lead the team, solve the problem, and complete the mission.” Against the odds, he managed to rally his men, recover the necessary equipment from the enemy, and see the mission through. “We pulled it off, and the battalion achieved success.”

Moments like this forced him to transition from simply doing his role well to taking ownership of others’ success. Yet Ee Learn downplays it with humility. “I’m not sure how it happened,” he said with a laugh. “I guess I just had to step up, do my best, and not let the team down. Lucky for me, my team always stepped up to cover my six whenever I didn’t meet the mark.”

“In life, you don’t always get the luxury of choosing your team. You work with who you have,” he explains. “That taught me a lot—especially about people motivation and resourcefulness.”

His military career saw him move across domains—from infantry to artillery, logistics to IT, training to transport. The variety gave him a breadth of operational exposure. “It was never just about systems,” he says. “It was always about the people.”

It was not just the scale of responsibility, but the clarity with which he recognised that even in structured institutions, leadership is deeply human. It made me reflect on how often we overlook the emotional intelligence needed to lead effectively.

Leaping into the Private Sector

Many might have expected him to remain in the comfort of a familiar system. But for Ee Learn, growth came from the willingness to start over.

After two decades in uniform, he stepped into the private sector. “I wanted to try something new, to experiment and learn. The private sector was a new oasis.”

It was a deliberate pivot, one driven not by dissatisfaction but by curiosity. His next chapters spanned industries as diverse as aviation, logistics, sustainability, and consultancy.

He remembers sitting in meetings where acronyms flew past him, the jargon of business strategy and shareholder reports making him feel like a rookie again. “It was like learning a new language all over,” he says. There were moments of doubt—times he wondered if he had made a mistake. But instead of retreating, he reframed the discomfort as fuel. Every new project, every corporate culture shock, became another learning curve he was determined to climb.

“It wasn’t easy,” he reflects. “But I wanted to start over. Embracing the discomfort made me sharper. It gave me a much wider lens on how the world operates.”

Purpose in Action at NTUC LearningHub

At NTUC LearningHub, Ee Learn has found not just a platform, but a purpose to weave together his wealth of experience in service of workforce transformation.

Today, Ee Learn brings together all the threads of his experience to drive sector-based upskilling strategies across industries like healthcare, sustainability, retail, and more.

But he sees his role as more than strategic. “My real role is to find the social motivation behind learning,” he explains. “It’s not just about skills. It’s about helping workers move forward in life.”

His core belief? That business transformation must precede workforce transformation.

“We can train all we want, but if the business isn’t changing, then it’s just transactional. We must design learning to move with the business. That’s when it sticks.”

This perspective has guided how NTUC LearningHub engages with employers, regulators and unions to ensure training solutions are relevant, practical, and future-focused. It also reflects a deeply human view of upskilling—not as a checkbox, but as a lever for social mobility.

Embodying the spirit of lifelong learning, Ee Learn chooses to remain a student of the world. Despite his position, he doesn’t pretend to have all the answers. In fact, he considers himself “a jack of all trades, master of none,” and says so without apology.

“That’s the challenge at the top. You have to stay curious,” he says. “Especially here at NTUC LearningHub, where every sector we serve teaches you something new. That’s why you need to stay hungry. Because once you stop learning, you stop growing.”

For Ee Learn, being a generalist isn’t about knowing less, but about being curious enough to know more. It’s about connecting the dots across disciplines, industries, and people. And it’s also about encouraging others not to get stuck in their silos. “Many people get so caught up in their own domain or specialisation that they forget to look up and see the bigger picture,” he observes. “Lifelong learning keeps you adaptable, and adaptability is what makes you valuable.”

As leaders we must evolve too. “We can’t fall into the trap of thinking we’ve arrived. We need to adapt not just for the job, but for ourselves.”

The Man Off-Duty

Beyond the boardroom, Ee Learn remains anchored by simple joys—chief among them, football.

Ee Learn finds balance on the football pitch—or these days, in front of the screen as a lifelong Liverpool fan. “It keeps me grounded. Football reminds me that you don’t win alone,” he shares. It’s a sentiment of teamwork that echoes through his story.

Finally, his life philosophy? “YOLO,” he says, smiling. “You Only Live Once! Life’s tough. But it’s a series of choices. You just have to live it—with no regrets.”

As our conversation drew to a close, I asked him what lies ahead—and as always, his focus remained outward, not inward.

“It’s always about the people,” he says. “About helping others discover what they’re capable of. That’s what drives me.”

Just like his teachers once did for him.

One thought stayed with me: in a world that’s always racing toward the next milestone, perhaps the most powerful thing a leader can do is to slow down, listen, and help others move forward.

Kopi with LHUBBERS - A Journey of Grit and Growth

A cup with Lai Yoke Lian, Head of Urban Systems and Connectivity, NTUC LearningHub
By Steven Lee, Brand & Communications, NTUC LearningHub

When I first met Yoke Lian, I didn’t know what to expect. We sat down for kopi and at first, she seemed almost reserved. I expected an engaging conversation—but what I didn’t expect was how different she came across in a one-on-one setting. Known in the office for her upbeat personality and cheerful presence, she was surprisingly introspective as we chatted. It wasn’t that she was quieter, but there was a reflective depth in her tone, as if opening up a seldom-seen side of her.

Beneath her composed exterior lies the heart of someone who has forged her own way forward—an ex-auxiliary police officer, APO Instructor, Aviation Security Trainer, and now, the Head of Urban Systems and Connectivity at NTUC LearningHub (NTUC LHUB).

As we chatted, I began to piece together the layers of her life—each more extraordinary than the last. Her story is one of grit, growth, and an unwavering belief in lifelong learning.

Breaking Barriers: A Foundation in Resilience
Long before her time in corporate corridors, Yoke Lian was walking a very different path. She took her first professional steps in the security sector—an industry known for its intensity and typically male-dominated environment.

“I was drawn to the structure, the action,” she shared. “I wanted to prove I could thrive in that world.”

As one of the few women training to carry firearms, Yoke Lian quickly learned to hold her own. Starting out as a contract auxiliary police officer, she worked tirelessly, steadily rising through the ranks. Over 13 years of perseverance, dedication, and consistent performance, she earned the title of Staff Sergeant.

Being one of the few women in the field wasn’t easy. “In the beginning, I definitely felt like I had to work twice as hard to be taken seriously,” she admitted. “There were times I questioned if I belonged. But I focused on doing the work well and earning the respect of my peers.”

Her hard work and determination paid off, ultimately earning her the respect and position she had worked so hard for.

One of her most unique assignments?

Serving as part of the security detail at high-profile events such as Chingay and the IMF conference—where high-net-worth individuals and dignitaries were in attendance. These roles demanded vigilance, precision, and the ability to stay calm under pressure.

Eventually, she transitioned into training roles, where she was responsible for planning basic recruit training, liaising with internal and external parties, and managing schedules.

Yoke Lian didn't just participate in the action—she helped run the show.

It was during this time as an instructor that her passion for people development started to emerge. Training new recruits sparked something deeper: the joy of helping others succeed. This experience ignited her desire to transition from front-line duties to a more people-centric path in adult education.

“Seeing someone grow in confidence, knowing you played a part in that—it’s powerful,” she said. She recalled one recruit who was painfully shy during their first few days, barely making eye contact. "I remember encouraging him to speak up during aviation security training, and by the end of the course, he performed well and was certified as Aviation Screening Officer. That transformation—it stays with you."

As she spoke about her transition from front-line roles to becoming a trainer, it was clear she was driven by something deeper than just professional growth. There was a palpable passion for developing others, for sharing her knowledge, and for contributing to a larger purpose.

Her tenure was filled with multi-faceted roles. I found myself intrigued by the diversity of her experiences. Yet, despite her impressive career, she didn’t come across as boastful. There was no air of arrogance, just a quiet pride in the work she’d done and the people she’d helped along the way.

From Security to Skills Training
In 2008, she made a significant leap, joining NTUC LHUB initially to support training in the manufacturing sector before pivoting to the security training portfolio. The shift from tactical ground duties to backend administration was daunting. While the setting was different, she found some familiar ground in the skills she had honed in her previous role—managing rosters, coordinating deployments, and handling operational logistics. “In some ways, the work wasn’t entirely foreign. I was used to coordinating moving parts and ensuring things ran smoothly. But at LHUB, the context was completely new—training programmes, client requirements, curriculum—it was a different kind of complexity.”

“I had to start from scratch,” she admitted. “But I realised my prior experience managing operations helped me juggle logistics and stakeholder needs effectively.”

The work was challenging and unfamiliar—business development, client management, curriculum planning. Yet, Yoke Lian remained undeterred.

“I told myself, if others can do it, I can too,” she says with quiet conviction.

Facing steep learning curves, Yoke Lian chose not to stay stagnant. She upskilled relentlessly—earning ACTA certification, then a diploma and degree in Business Management, which helped her in managing prospective clients and stakeholders. Coming from a non-tertiary background, this academic pursuit marked a personal milestone.

“I didn’t want to feel limited. I wanted to grow,” she enthused.

Yoke Lian’s efforts paid off. Her ability to balance technical know-how with business acumen began to take shape. She built relationships with stakeholders, unions, and learners alike. She listened to feedback from the ground and responded with practical, learner-centred solutions.

One example of how her upskilling paid off was her ability to push the boundaries of what security training could look like. Drawing on her industry experience and new understanding of workforce trends, she helped expand the scope of NTUC LHUB's offerings to include areas like technology-enabled security and digital surveillance.

"Security isn't just about boots on the ground anymore," she said. "We now train officers to understand data, use tech platforms, and work alongside automation."

With her newly acquired business acumen and qualifications, she was able to bridge operational insights with strategic thinking, particularly in workforce transformation efforts. "Having walked the ground myself, I understood the challenges learners faced. That helped me shape training that was practical, grounded, and relevant," she shared. She brought with her a unique lens: operational experience, empathy for learners, and a solutions-first mindset.

A Leader Still Learning
Yoke Lian’s career has been one of constant reinvention. Transitioning from security to leading other sectors at NTUC LHUB, she’s faced a new set of challenges requiring a completely different skillset. Initially, her work in security required a sharp focus on coordination, logistics, and operational management. But as her career expanded, so did her responsibilities—and with that, the need for entirely new capabilities.

When she took on the role of leading sectors beyond security, including urban systems and connectivity, she found herself in uncharted territory. "I was moving from a well-established industry with a clear operational framework to areas where the challenges were more dynamic," she said. "The skills required to lead were no longer just about managing people and resources. I had to think more strategically, address complex problems, and guide my team through uncertainty." The transition wasn’t without its challenges. However, Yoke Lian approached this head-on, upskilling herself in areas like data analytics, AI, and business management to help her navigate the fast-evolving landscape.

A memorable moment that stands out was during a crucial project, where her team was tasked with supporting the launch of SGUnited Skills programmes during the pandemic. The complexities were immense, but with her newly developed strategic mindset, she navigated the situation by ensuring that her team stayed aligned with NTUC LHUB’s mission while being adaptable in the face of unpredictable circumstances.

"I remember the urgency of the situation," she said. "We didn’t have all the answers, but we worked together to find solutions and deliver results for the workers who depended on us." That experience demonstrated just how much she had grown into her role and how crucial her ongoing learning journey was.

Even though Yoke Lian has been with NTUC LHUB for more than a decade, her drive to stay is rooted in the constant opportunities for growth and learning. “The learning never stops here,” she shared. "I’ve been fortunate to evolve with the company, but it’s the learning that keeps me engaged. Every day presents new challenges, and that’s what keeps me coming back.” For Yoke Lian, staying at NTUC LHUB isn’t about comfort; it’s about the opportunity to keep evolving, both personally and professionally. The diverse sectors she now oversees demand fresh perspectives and creative problem-solving skills, and she thrives on this.

Her ability to adapt and remain engaged, despite the years spent at the same organisation, speaks volumes about the impact of continuous learning. At NTUC LHUB, she's not just climbing the corporate ladder—she’s constantly reinventing herself and, by extension, her role. This willingness to grow and learn reflects her belief that no matter how far one has come, there is always more to learn.

In essence, it’s the growth that keeps Yoke Lian at NTUC LHUB, not just the role itself.

Finding Solace and Strength in Nature
Outside of work, Yoke Lian’s sanctuary is the natural world. A nature enthusiast at heart, she finds rejuvenation through hiking and travel.

“Nature teaches you patience and endurance,” she shares. “Whether it’s trekking up Mt. Fuji or walking through Hort Park, it reminds me to pace myself.”

For her, hiking is more than a hobby—it’s a metaphor for life: knowing when to push forward, when to pause, and how to navigate the steep climbs and quiet moments. Her solo travels have taken her across Asia, and each journey brings back new perspectives on resilience, self-discovery, and the importance of embracing the unknown.

Her advice for aspiring professionals?

“Adopt a growth mindset. Don’t be afraid to ask, to learn, or to fall.”

I remember thinking to myself, “This is a person who has truly lived.”

Yoke Lian wasn’t just speaking about achievements in the abstract; she spoke from lived experiences, of trials and triumphs, of persistence in the face of adversity. Her story wasn’t one of a typical career progression; it was a dynamic journey shaped by resilience, adaptability, and a constant drive to learn and grow.

Kopi with LHUBBERS - Sowing Seeds of Success: A Journey of Growth, Leadership and Lifelong Learning

A cup with Liew Wai Loon, Team Manager, E-Sales, Consumer Sales, NTUC LearningHub
By Steven Lee, Brand & Communications, NTUC LearningHub

As I sit down with Wai Loon in a cosy café near NTUC LearningHub (NTUC LHUB)’s main branch, he greets me with a warm smile. His innate zest for life is clear. Even before the conversation begins, what strikes me most is the sense of purpose he exudes — a blend of humility, confidence, and unshakeable positivity.

One of the team leaders in NTUC LHUB’s consumer sales division, Wai Loon’s life is a tapestry woven with threads of adversity, creative pursuits, and an unwavering commitment to lifelong learning.

Sowing the Seeds through Hardship
At the heart of Wai Loon’s journey is his belief in the philosophy of ‘Karmic Seed’, a Tibetan principle emphasising generosity and intentional action. However, his philosophy towards life was not formed overnight.

Wai Loon’s journey began with a series of difficult yet transformative experiences in his early career. Working in a sales and marketing role at a private organisation dealing with the elderly, Wai Loon found himself facing financial stress and job instability in an environment that was not the most conducive for his personal growth.

Despite this, he found meaning in supporting the vulnerable who relied on him, which gave him a sense of purpose. With colleagues being laid off, Wai Loon persevered, even travelling to expand the organisation’s business overseas while grappling with uncertainty.

Rather than becoming disheartened, Wai Loon chose to reflect on his actions and decisions, believing that every challenge was a lesson in growth. His belief in planting good seeds for the future kept him going.

These reflections led him to a profound understanding: he wanted to channel his efforts toward empowering others. Inspired by the ‘Karmic Seed’ philosophy, the principle of ‘helping others to achieve what you want for yourself’ resonated deeply with his own struggles and successes, shaping his professional and personal relationships.

This eventually inspired his transition to NTUC LHUB, where he could help workers through learning and skill development—a mission that aligned perfectly with his values.

“Whatever I want, I help someone else get it first. Whatever I don’t want, I stop doing it to others,” Wai Loon shares. “种子开花了,” he quips, which means, “the seeds have blossomed.”

Blossoming into a New Role
One of the most memorable experiences for Wai Loon was the guidance he received early in his journey at NTUC LHUB. His supervisor, recognising his potential, provided him with guidance on navigating the complexities of his role. Through candid feedback and unwavering support, Wai Loon’s supervisor helped to build his confidence and refine his leadership abilities. “It wasn’t just about giving me advice,” Wai Loon recalls, “but about having someone believe in me and invest their time to help me grow.”

These seeds flourished as Wai Loon advanced through the ranks, first as deputy team lead and eventually as team lead in 2022. Inspired by the guidance he received, Wai Loon embraced his new responsibilities with a commitment to nurturing and empowering his team. Hence, he enrolled in the International Coaching Federation (ICF) accredited Khrysalis coaching courses offered by NTUC LHUB. Through these courses, he honed skills such as active listening and powerful questioning.

By applying these skills, Wai Loon fostered an environment of trust and collaboration within his team. He enabled his colleagues to achieve their goals, creating a culture where everyone felt valued and supported. His efforts translated into tangible improvements in team performance and morale, underscoring his commitment to lead with empathy and purpose.

Wai Loon recalls one rewarding experience, "Part of our role is to guide customers through the course registration process," Wai Loon explained. "At one point, my team was overwhelmed by the volume of feedback and queries. Having faced a similar challenge when I first started, I stepped in to offer support." Through patience and steady guidance, he helped his colleagues gain clarity and confidence to excel at work. Witnessing their growth was a defining moment for Wai Loon, reinforcing his philosophy of life.

From Content Creation to Workflow Automation
Outside the office, Wai Loon’s is an avid outdoor enthusiast, finding joy and rejuvenation in nature. His creative spirit shines brightest through his YouTube channel. Inspired by a seminar he attended for YouTube creators, he believes in the idea that small, consistent efforts can lead to significant outcomes eventually. “If a single video touches the life of one person, imagine the meaningful impact 1,000 videos will have,” Wai Loon mused.

What started as a platform to share his interests grew into a space where he honed valuable technical skills, such as video editing and storytelling. These experiences fuelled his curiosity about technology’s potential to create meaningful connections and solutions.

Eager to leverage his creativity, Wai Loon pursued a Workflow Automation course, also offered by NTUC LHUB. This newfound expertise allowed him to streamline work processes, improve team efficiency, and enhance customer experience. By automating repetitive tasks with the use of new technology tools like Microsoft Copilot and Power Automate, Wai Loon freed up time for his team to focus on engaging customers with purpose and delivering more personalised interactions. This helps to ultimately drive sales for the company.

Together with the team, Wai Loon’s efforts culminated in NTUC LHUB’s recent wins at the 24th Contact Centre Association of Singapore (CCAS) International Contact Centre Awards.

Collaborating closely with his teammates, Wai Loon was instrumental in producing, editing, and overseeing the award submission video, which was crucial in showcasing his team’s accomplishments. His ability to craft a compelling narrative through visuals and storytelling highlighted the organisation’s commitment to excellence in customer service and sales.

A Journey of Inspiration
From fellow colleagues and supervisors who supported his growth, he cherishes every guiding light that has illuminated his path.

“Lifelong learning keeps me grounded and ready to contribute back to society,” Wai Loon reflects. “I’m lucky to have met many guìrén—benefactors—who have helped me. I need to pay forward what I have received from my previous and current supervisor. My goal is to grow and now become a benefactor for others.”

This mindset drives his passion, shapes his leadership style, and fuels his relentless pursuit of growth. Wai Loon’s journey is a reminder that by aligning passions with purpose, embracing lifelong learning, and cultivating a spirit of gratitude, we can all achieve meaningful success.

As I wrap up my conversation with Wai Loon, I cannot help but feel inspired by his infectious outlook towards life. His story is a powerful example of how passion and purpose can transform not just one’s own life, but the lives of those around them. In his own words, “To succeed, go all out, keep it simple, and charge forward!”

Kopi with LHUBBERS - From Sky-High Dreams to Paving the Way for Others

A cup with Sheena Ho, Senior Manager, Programme Management (CEO Office), NTUC LearningHub
By Steven Lee, Brand & Communications, NTUC LearningHub

Ever experienced a moment that commands your attention? That is exactly how I felt during my Kopi session with Sheena. She exudes a professional demeanour, setting an atmosphere of respect and focus with a quiet confidence.

"Thank you for joining me today, Sheena," I began, my voice steady yet filled with admiration for her accomplishments. "I've heard about your journey, and I am excited to share your insights with our readers."

She responded with a warm and composed smile, "The pleasure is all mine.”

Sheena's career trajectory is nothing short of inspiring — marked by challenges and pivotal choices that have shaped her into an advocate for lifelong learning within the training and education sector.

Her journey began in a different field, but through determination and adaptability, she has carved out a career that not only showcases her expertise but reflects her commitment to empowering others in their educational pursuits.

Thus, our Kopi session unfolded.

From flying high to running a business

Sheena’s first step into the professional world was far from the classroom. Fresh out of university with a Bachelor of Business in Tourism Management, she embarked on a journey as a cabin crew, soaring across the globe while honing essential skills in customer service, communication, and problem-solving. "My early years were about exploring different roles," she recalls, sharing that she subsequently transitioned into the hospitality industry where she handled corporate sales.

She then took a bold leap into entrepreneurship, combining her passion for beauty and wellness to open her own nail salon — a chic sanctuary that quickly garnered a loyal clientele. Running the establishment proved to be both thrilling and challenging, providing her with firsthand experience in business management and an in-depth understanding of the beauty industry’s technical skills. "Starting my own business was a steep learning curve,” Sheena admits. “It was a nail-biting time for me, pardon the pun. I had no experience as a business owner, but I made up my mind to at least give it a try since I was young. It was hands-on in every sense—hiring, operations, procurement, marketing—you name it, I did it. It was tough but immensely fulfilling.”

Despite the rewards of these positions, Sheena felt something was missing. While managing her salon, she took it upon herself to teach her employees everything they needed to know — from technical skills such as nail artistry to essential soft skills like customer service. Unbeknownst to her, these experiences would guide her toward discovering her true passion: lifelong learning and the desire to impart her knowledge and expertise to empower and uplift those around her.

Grooming the next generation of service professionals

Sheena’s foray into education wasn’t just a career shift. It was the missing link in her journey. "I have always found joy in sharing knowledge, and teaching has provided me with the perfect platform to do so," Sheena reflects.

Thus, Sheena sought to teach. This desire led her on her first stint as an adjunct lecturer at the Institute of Technical Education (ITE) College West, teaching Tourism management programmes before being offered a full-time role in Beauty and Spa Management at ITE College East, teaching beauty techniques like nail artistry, spa management, professional grooming and soft skills. This was where she got her first certification in teaching: the Pedagogical Certificate in Technical Education (PCTE), and then her Diploma in Adult Continuing Education (DACE) two years later. Furthermore, Sheena attained a Diploma in Advanced Make Up and Styling, a certification which allowed her to teach a wider array of beauty courses. This unwavering commitment to learning has been a hallmark of her professional journey.

But it was not just about imparting technical skills, it was about empowering the next generation of service professionals.

"I never imagined I’d be teaching, but it felt like a natural extension of my experiences," she explains. Her unique blend of business savvy and hands-on expertise gave her students something invaluable — a mentor who understood both the craft and the industry. “It wasn’t easy, as teaching did not provide the same freedom and flexibility I had enjoyed as a business owner. However, witnessing my students diligently applying their newfound skills and deriving joy from their learning brought me a profound sense of fulfilment that I had not experienced before. This realisation became my driving force, enabling me to navigate the demands and expectations of being an educator with resilience and passion.”

Lifelong learning: the heart of Sheena’s journey

Sheena’s journey embodies not only reinvention but also an unwavering commitment to self-improvement. A true lifelong learner, she also pursued the role of Certified Scrum Master, Coaching, Lean Six Sigma programmes amongst others, viewing them as crucial steps in her ongoing quest for knowledge and growth.

“I’ve always been driven by a growth mindset. There’s always room to improve, always a new challenge to conquer,” she says, eyes gleaming with ambition. This insatiable curiosity has been the guiding force behind her successes, fuelling her desire to constantly upgrade her skills — not just for personal growth, but to offer more value to her students and colleagues.

During her tenure at PersolKelly, Sheena earned her Advanced Certificate in Learning and Performance (ACLP), leveraging her experience in curriculum design from her ITE days to help craft comprehensive curricula and trained over 1,000 Changi Experience Ambassadors (CEAs) and frontliners at Singapore Changi Airport, one of her key clients. Her dedication to enhancing the skills of these professionals has contributed to elevating service standards in one of the world's best airports.

However, when the pandemic struck, the aviation industry came to a standstill, leaving many CEAs at risk of losing their jobs. Sheena was faced with the monumental task of developing innovative training programmes and workplace curricula to keep the CEAs engaged. “It was a challenging time for me,” she explained. “I had to help them remain meaningfully employed during such an unprecedented period.” Not only did Sheena succeed in her aim, she also received glowing reviews from many of her trainees.

Her impact extended far beyond what was visible, touching lives and fostering resilience in an uncertain world. In retrospect, Sheena recognised that her exploration of various roles in life, particularly her foray into teaching, was crucial in equipping her to navigate the challenges during that period. This underscored the significance of cultivating a growth mindset towards lifelong learning — an approach she has embraced throughout her journey.

And it has served her well in her current role at NTUC LearningHub, where she oversees the strategic planning, overseas expansion and execution of multiple educational programmes, ensuring the alignment with organisational goals.

Beyond the classroom

Even outside of work, Sheena’s zest for life is clear. She’s a passionate traveller, a tennis enthusiast, and an avid lover of fine dining and wine. "Tennis is something I picked up with my son — it’s our way of staying healthy and enjoying time together," she shares. Her love for food and wine led her to pursue a WSET 2 Award in Wines, proving that learning never really stops!

"Life should be about balance," Sheena says. "I believe in working hard, but I also believe in doing what I enjoy."

Unsurprisingly, Sheena’s talent extends to the kitchen as well. She delights in hosting dinner parties, where she prepares her own signature dishes, each one crafted to tantalise the palate of her guests.

Advice for the next generation

When asked what advice she would give her younger self, Sheena pauses thoughtfully before answering, "I’d tell myself to find my passion earlier and dive deep into it. But at the same time, I wouldn’t trade my experiences for anything."

Each experience, whether it was working in hospitality, running a business, or stepping into education, has certainly shaped her into the person she is today.

“Believe in yourself and savour moments of joy. This mindset will help you embrace life's journey, as experience is the greatest teacher," Sheena imparted with a warm, knowing smile.

Sheena has certainly personified what she preaches as she has been awarded the title of Specialist Adult Educator (AEP-SAE) by the Institute of Adult Learning for master of skills in facilitation  — a testament to her commitment to lifelong learning.

My kopi session with Sheena was not only enjoyable but also profoundly introspective. It prompted me to reflect on my own journey what lies ahead.

It left me pondering the question:

“What is my lifelong learning story?”

Kopi with LHUBBERS - The Woman Behind the Code

A cup with Phyu Me Zaw, Senior Business Analyst, NTUC LearningHub
By Steven Lee, Brand & Communications, NTUC LearningHub

On yet another sweltering day, the air hung heavy with humidity. It was against this backdrop that she entered our meeting space, her professional demeanour as crisp as her attire.

“Please make yourself comfortable,” I offered. “This cup of kopi may appear complimentary, but I will be collecting your payment in conversation currency,” I said in a playful tone.

Thus began my kopi session with Phyu Me Zaw, a Senior Business Analyst at NTUC LearningHub. Despite her small stature, Me Zaw exuded an aura of confidence. Her impressive trajectory in the ever-evolving tech industry stands as a beacon of inspiration for young women aspiring to leave their mark in the technology realm.

It was evident that Me Zaw's accomplishments were the fruit of considerable experience and an indomitable spirit—qualities perhaps requisite for excellence in a demanding field. My curiosity, however, extended beyond her professional façade; I sought to uncover the woman behind the code.

From humble beginnings

From her earliest years, Me Zaw harboured an ardent passion for computer science. Her innate affinity for logic and rationality enabled her to embrace coding as a second language easily. A strong foundation in mathematics, established during her youth, was crucial in her transition from software engineer to business analyst.

Yet, Me Zaw's path to NTUC LearningHub was far from a leisurely stroll. In her formative years, computers were a rarity, viewed as luxuries rather than the ubiquitous machines they are today. The tech industry, now omnipresent, was then barely visible on the horizon.

For a young Burmese girl with big dreams, it was particularly daunting—especially when those around her seemed content with less ambitious pursuits.

Reflecting on her journey, Me Zaw shared, "In Myanmar, prospects for growth and advancement were scarce. Only the academic elites in high school were granted the privilege of pursuing medicine or computer science. Those were challenging times. Even then, the Internet was practically non-existent in my country. Yet, my love for computers and all possibilities technology brings, fuelled my determination to learn everything about them.”

“In retrospect, it was this passion that propelled me to excel academically, knowing that a career in computing was my ultimate goal. I recognised how precious each opportunity was, and I went for them with strong determination, a decision I’m now really thankful for,” Me Zaw continued.

Hearing that, I almost sensed a tinge of relief in her voice. Me Zaw had persevered relentlessly to get to where she is today. Her passion for coding and problem-solving had led her to obtain a degree in Computer Science. Facing limited career opportunities back home, she made the bold decision to uproot herself to further her studies in Singapore. Her postgraduate diploma from the National University of Singapore (NUS) had not only equipped her with valuable skills but also opened doors to a rewarding career as a software engineer.

On the voyage of continuous learning

Throughout her career, Me Zaw had worked on various projects, ranging from cashless payment solutions to financial integration projects. Her ability to adapt to different teams and work environments has been a key factor in her success. “It's not about adhering rigidly to one style, but about how we tailor the approach to bring out the best from different team members,” she explained.

Drawing from her rich academic background and years of professional experience, Me Zaw has masterfully woven together her technical prowess and refined interpersonal skills into her current role as a Senior Business Analyst at NTUC LearningHub. In this pivotal position, she serves as a crucial conduit between full-stack developers and internal clients, leveraging her comprehensive understanding of both business dynamics and technical intricacies to generate insightful analyses and propose data-driven organisational change.

Despite her impressive accomplishments, Me Zaw maintains a humble perspective on her journey. "It is a continuous voyage," she reflects. "Much is still unexplored beneath the surface. I've yet to reach my full potential and I see ample room for growth and improvement.”

Me Zaw's commitment to lifelong learning has been the cornerstone of her professional evolution. In an industry characterised by rapid technological advancements, she firmly believes that maintaining relevance demands constant upskilling. "In this field, stagnation equates to irrelevance in the blink of an eye," she emphasised. This led her to pursue a Master of Technology in Software Engineering at NUS-ISS, a significant undertaking that saw her return to school years after her initial graduation.

As I absorbed Me Zaw's words, I couldn't help but feel in awe of her passion. Her journey serves as a compelling testament to the power of continuous learning and there are many leaves to take out from her book of life.

Female representation in the tech industry

As a woman navigating the tech space, Me Zaw has encountered her fair share of challenges, particularly in striking a work-life balance and maintaining her professional relevance. "Keeping pace with the tech industry's demands is an ongoing struggle," Me Zaw mused. "I must continually remind myself that change is both constant and inevitable.”

She candidly shares her perspective on the industry's demands: "If I could make an improvement in this field, it would be a more structured work schedule. From my previous experience as a technical lead, I learned that time management is crucial in the tech industry, especially in software engineering as a young woman with family responsibilities and commitments."

Despite these challenges, Me Zaw maintains an optimistic outlook on the increasing female representation in tech. "Compared to the past, I'm witnessing a growing number of young women in tech," she notes. "With flexible work arrangements today, such as in NTUC LearningHub, it has made the field more accessible to both women and men.”

“The industry stands to gain significantly from women’s perspective. Contrary to some beliefs, increased female representation in tech is undoubtedly beneficial, paving the way for innovation through crucial conversations, and a more balanced workforce. It's not about competition between genders; it's about the human experience in tech,” said Me Zaw.

Cooking maestro

When I asked about her hobbies outside of work, Phyu Me Zaw's face lit up with excitement. "I love cooking," she exclaimed. "My favourite dish to prepare for my family is a national Myanmar dish called Mohinga, a fish soup made with rice noodles. The recipe was passed down from my mother.”

“There are some eateries at Peninsula Plaza at City Hall which sell authentic Myanmar cuisine. Whenever I miss the taste of home, I always head down there for a spoonful,” Me Zaw said gleefully.

“Plus, I have grown to love local food as well. My husband and I love the diverse cultures that can be found in Singapore, which translates to a plethora of cuisines. I love laksa, so I have also learned how to prepare it too. Cooking really gives me the freedom to experiment and discover the tastes that I really like. There is always a new technique or method to prepare a dish, and I am always learning something new as well.”

Besides cooking, I further discovered that Me Zaw is an avid reader too. She enthusiastically described her favourite book of all time, entitled ‘How to Win Friends & Influence People’ by Dale Carnegie. One of her favourite quotes from the book is:

“You must be what your experiences, environment and heredity have made you. For better or for worse, you must play your own little instrument in the orchestra of life.”

Inspired by this quote, Me Zaw has constantly motivates herself to be better every single day, to gain new experiences, knowledge and to obtain the power to shape her environment. In this way, she can truly be the conductor in her life’s orchestra.

As our conversation drew to a close, I found myself marvelling at the depth and richness of the exchange. My kopi session this round highlighted the immense value of taking the time to truly connect with our colleagues, for in doing so, we not only enrich our understanding of one another but also foster a more vibrant and interconnected workplace community.

So, are we ready for the next?

Kopi with LHUBBERS - Navigating Adversity to Inspire Meaningful Change

A cup with Low Choon Chye, Head of Sustainability, NTUC LearningHub
By Steven Lee, Brand & Communications, NTUC LearningHub

It was a typical sweltering day when I had the pleasure of meeting Choon Chye. Dressed in a sharp pink business shirt and grey pants, his vibrant demeanour exuded confidence and charisma, reflecting his assuredness in his endeavours.

With over six years of tenure at NTUC LearningHub (NTUC LHUB), Choon Chye has amassed considerable experience and knowledge, which he is eager to share with his colleagues or fellow LHUBBERS as we fondly call ourselves.

Quest to Inspire Positive Change
“My quest to inspire others started during my university days,” shared the Head of Sustainability at NTUC LHUB.

Driven by an earnest desire to enact meaningful change, Choon Chye spoke with profound enthusiasm: “I was fortunate to receive the Singapore National Cooperative Federation (SNCF) scholarship, which bore the emblematic motto ‘Scholars with a Heart’. I found resonance in its ethos, and this fuelled my aspirations to lead, serve, and contribute towards creating a better world for our community.”

With Aerospace Engineering as his major and Business as a minor, Choon Chye explained how this combination endowed him with indispensable skills such as critical thinking and problem-solving. "While engineering modules provided a solid foundation, it was the nuances of business studies that captivated me, leading me to my current role at NTUC LHUB, where contributing to organisational growth and collective endeavour brings me immense fulfilment."

As I delved deeper into Choon Chye's journey, it became clear that his work is not merely a job – it is a purposeful venture aimed at transforming lives.

Curious about his perspective on leadership, I posed a question: "How have your insights into leadership evolved since taking on a leadership role in the workplace?"

Nurturing Leadership and Self-Management
“After assuming a leadership role, I have learned hard lessons as a leader. Management is an ongoing learning process. It is difficult to get everything right on the first try,” he said.

"A leader's role is to recognise the potential in each individual, enabling them to leverage their unique strengths for collective success. Embracing diversity is paramount; acknowledging that everyone brings distinct perspectives, experiences, beliefs, and values to the table. I cannot impose my own viewpoints and expect blind compliance.”

He emphasised that genuine leadership entails authenticity and sincerity, fostering a shared belief in the organisation's vision. “It is through this genuine connection that true innovation flourishes,” he continued. “But the hardest person you will ever have to lead is yourself,” said Choon Chye, drawing inspiration from Bill George's poignant words.

In addition to highlighting the significance of self-leadership and resilience, Choon Chye has underscored the vital role of establishing clear communication channels to amplify the value and benefits of NTUC LHUB's training programmes among key partners, trainers, and trainees. “In my capacity as a course developer and curriculum architect, I endeavour to articulate and exemplify the value proposition to diverse stakeholders, ensuring alignment with organisational objectives and fulfilling diverse customer needs. A notable example is our partnership with electric carmaker BYD which focuses on the importance of electric vehicle (EV) safety and maintenance procedures and processes, thereby catering to other learners beyond EV technicians.”

“However, our very first class did not garner many sign-ups. This was disappointing and demoralising to my team. Yet, we went ahead after much discussion and support from our partner, BYD. I learned that despite initial setbacks, I should remain resolute in my pursuit of collective success. With patience and perseverance, I fostered an environment within my team where setbacks serve as stepping stones rather than stumbling blocks in achieving our goals. Today, I am happy to share that classes are going well!” said Choon Chye.

Choon Chye also emphasised the importance of collaboration with industry partners to provide clients with the knowledge and expertise needed to thrive in the emerging green economy. “Regardless of the challenges faced, I strongly believe that we remain in a good position to champion sustainability in Singapore,” Choon Chye exclaimed.

Empowering Futures through Lifelong Learning
By now, it is evident that Choon Chye cherishes cultivating a growth mindset. But how does he translate this value into action? "I strongly advocate for lifelong learning as a catalyst for personal and organisational growth," he emphasises. "With unwavering support from my mentors, I embarked on a journey of professional development, pursuing the WSQ Diploma in Design and Development of Learning for Performance (DDDLP) and the Advanced Certificate in Learning and Assessment (ACTA). These courses have not only enriched my understanding of learning theories but also bolstered my ability to craft impactful curricula, facilitating profound learning journeys."

"As Head of Sustainability, I've cultivated a keen awareness of aligning business objectives with learning initiatives, while also considering the diverse attributes and profiles of our learners."

Choon Chye's journey at NTUC LHUB so far has underscored his dedication to enhancing the employability of workers in Singapore. "As I continue along this path, I'm humbled by the opportunity to contribute to shaping a brighter future for both individuals and organisations. I aim to inspire others through meaningful actions,” he reflected.

"And I hope that my work serves as inspiration for others to cultivate a growth mindset and effect meaningful change in their own lives." Choon Chye concluded.

Working Towards a Future Together
My kopi session with Choon Chye was both extensive and enlightening. Throughout our discussion, he generously shared insights into leadership, illuminating the diverse perspectives and styles inherent in effective leadership.

"Leadership is not about being in charge. It's about taking care of those in our charge,” Choon Chye said, quoting Simon Sinek.

Despite his ascent to a leadership role, Choon Chye remains grounded, never losing sight of the journey that brought him to where he stands today. He acknowledges the hard work, dedication, and the invaluable support of his colleagues who have contributed to his success.

“We never truly achieve on our own. Only when we come together can true transformation take place,” he said.

Choon Chye's ongoing leadership reminds us of the importance of leading with heart and compassion. There is still much to learn for Choon Chye, and the same can be said for the rest of us.

Continuously Transforming Myself to Keep Abreast of Cybersecurity

By Kenneth Choo, Deputy Director, Cyber & Governance, Digital Technology, NTUC LearningHub

Embarking on a learning journey can be one of the most significant life investments that allow us to explore our passions, develop our skills, and shape our future in an introspective and transformative way. In this reflective piece, I will share my personal story and the impact continuous learning has had on both my personal life and career, particularly in the realm of cybersecurity. I hope this can motivate others to seize new opportunities and invest in themselves to grow and succeed.

My journey in the world of technology started with managing Information Technology (IT) infrastructure and operations. Then, I became aware of the significant role technology plays in our lives and the increasing need for robust security measures. Having the privilege to work across various industries from Healthtech, and to now Edtech for nearly 20 years, I witnessed the evolution of cyber threats and the potential risks they posed to organisations. This sparked my growing interest in cybersecurity even further.

I realise that cybersecurity is not just a technical field but a critical aspect for business operations to run seamlessly. By specialising in this field, I play a more direct role in protecting digital systems and data from malicious attacks. I also appreciate the unique community of cybersecurity, where like-minded professionals come together easily to share knowledge and secure the ecosystem as a whole.

The best of both worlds
Throughout my career, various significant milestones shaped my path and propelled me forward in my pursuit of the cybersecurity domain. Having worked in the public and private sectors, I am able to compare the distinct differences, yet equally dynamic and challenging landscapes.

In the private sector, organisations are mainly driven by factors such as sales, profitability, and market competition. As businesses embark on digital transformation and rely on digital platforms to sell their products or provide their services, the need to implement robust cybersecurity measures becomes of paramount importance. However, more often than not, organisations are playing catch-up in this area and face a constant battle against cyber threats such as data breaches and ransomware attacks, especially Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs). The increased focus on tightened regulation and personal data protection, such as the Personal Data Protection Act (PDPA), further amplifies these challenges. It can be challenging to achieve a good balance in the investment of cyber measures versus other areas of the business as well, and it is always tough to determine if the investment is adequate. To overcome this issue, the cybersecurity trend in recent years is towards a risk-bask approach, where practitioners identify assets of higher risk by value and apply the appropriate controls based on the risk level. This approach helps provide better guidelines and enables organisations to allocate their cybersecurity resources more effectively.

On the other hand, the public sector operates within a unique landscape with different objectives. At the broad level, it focuses on digitalising Singapore towards becoming a Smart Nation and using technology to improve citizens’ life. At the same time, they are also responsible for securing our critical infrastructure (such as power, transport, and healthcare) and protecting our sensitive information from sophisticated attackers. A successful cyberattack on a government system can have far-reaching and adverse repercussions, impacting citizen safety and the nation's reputation.

It was intriguing to witness the growing importance of cybersecurity in different sectors and the critical need for skilled professionals to safeguard vital information and infrastructure. This demand is still growing positively today and there is a need to have a bigger pool of experts in this domain to ensure businesses have the capability to protect themselves from cyberattacks, as more companies continue in their digital transformation journey.

You are only as strong as your weakest link
In one of my previous roles, I witnessed a cyberattack initiated by a malicious actor planting a harmful thumb drive into an unattended and unsecured workstation. To mitigate the impact of this incident, the team responded by isolating the affected personal computer (PC), connected machines, and network for several hours. The operations team had to resort to manual processes to carry out their daily tasks, causing the support team to handle over a hundred customer complaint emails. Fortunately, the containment measures were implemented promptly, preventing sensitive data exfiltration. However, the organisation still experienced financial and reputational consequences from this incident.

In 2018, we also witnessed the significant impact of a cyberattack in Singapore's local public healthcare sector. This incident brought about a drastic transformation of the entire healthcare landscape, emphasising the critical need for robust cybersecurity measures to safeguard patient and health data. The attack originated by exploiting a vulnerability in a workstation, believed to be through an email phishing attack, and progressed through a series of steps and tools, ultimately resulting in the exfiltration of 1.5 million patient records. The incident had evident operational, financial, and reputational consequences, clearly demonstrating the sophistication of modern attackers and the advanced tools they employ.

Once again, this serves as a good reminder of the importance of securing all potential connections to our corporate network and not overlooking any potential weak link. We must always bear in mind that attackers are continuously targeting the weakest links. A good cybersecurity practitioner should always comprehensively assess the entire attack surface and adopt a mindset similar to that of an attacker. By doing so, we can better identify and understand potential vulnerabilities, weaknesses, and entry points malicious actors may exploit.

With evolving technologies such as Web 3.0, quantum computing, increased adoption of IoT technologies, and even artificial intelligence (AI) chatbots such as ChatGPT, cyber concerns will undoubtedly become more elevated and sophisticated. While ChatGPT can be used by many to improve their work, it is also a double-edged sword. For example, threat actors can easily obtain reconnaissance data, such as Internet Protocol (IP) address ranges, domain names, operating system vulnerabilities, etc. all within a single platform. It is also possible for threat actors to use ChatGPT in their weaponisation, delivery and exploitation stages, hence fast-tracking their attack chain.

Finding opportunities in the pandemic
When the COVID-19 pandemic hit, many companies were forced to adapt and expedite their digitalisation journey for survival. As the reliance on digital platforms and networks grew intensively, the importance of cybersecurity also increased exponentially. During the lockdown period and the transition to remote work arrangement, I realised that a unique opportunity arises. As some people might perceive this time as a setback, I chose to view it as a chance to further invest in my personal growth and learning.

With the reclaimed time from commuting and social engagement, I committed myself to various courses, dedicating weekends, and free hours to further upskill myself and broaden my portfolio. In addition to cybersecurity-related courses, I also explored other areas such as attending mindfulness workshops which helped to improve myself as an individual too. By doing this, I believe that I can position myself to thrive in the new norm and possibly open myself to more opportunities when the pandemic ends.

Seek out the silver lining and invest in yourself
My journey in cybersecurity, fuelled by a strong belief in lifelong learning, has been transformative. Besides shaping my skill set and broadening my perspective, it has also empowered me to make a difference in safeguarding digital systems and data.
By embracing opportunities, investing in myself, and prioritising continuous learning, I have grown both personally and professionally. As I reflect upon my journey, I am more convinced of the profound impact continuous learning has on our lives.

I encourage everyone, regardless of the field or industry you come from, to embark on your own journey of growth and transformation. Even during challenging times, it is essential to constantly embrace opportunities and seek out the silver lining behind them. Most importantly, invest in yourself and prioritise continuous learning as a pathway to success, self-fulfilment and making a positive impact in your role.

To my fellow cybersecurity practitioners, I encourage all to foster a collaborative and supportive mindset by sharing our knowledge and experiences whenever possible. Additionally, we should constantly nurture the next generation to ensure a robust pool of cybersecurity experts.

Let us embark on this lifelong learning journey together, where each step propels us closer to unlocking our full potential.

How Coaching Others Has Empowered Me Professionally

By Joe Leong, Product Manager, Core Skills Academy, NTUC LearningHub

In my previous role as a career coach, I have been fortunate enough to help many individuals achieve their career goals and improve their livelihoods. However, little did I know that becoming a career coach would positively impact my professional development and boost my confidence at the workplace.

I started my career in manufacturing, providing backend support for processes and machines. After nearly a decade, I found that relating to people was more my strength than working with machines, hence I pivoted to a career in recruitment. In the beginning, I found the job very challenging because I was not used to the competitive and stressful nature of a sales role. Thankfully, I had a great and understanding boss who coached and gave me much encouragement.

Struggling with imposter syndrome
As a career coach, my goal was to help people find meaningful jobs. While I was confident in the role, I had my own set of insecurities and doubts about my abilities. Internally I struggled with Imposter Syndrome when I could not see how my work translated into results that impacted others positively. This crippling feeling of inadequacy and self-doubt at times stopped me from embracing new challenges and possibilities.

Surprisingly, I was not the only one. Even famous individuals such as leaders, entrepreneurs and celebrities also struggled with Imposter Syndrome. These individuals have spoken publicly about their struggles, including Serena Williams, Tom Hanks, Michelle Obama, and even Albert Einstein. For Einstein, despite being acknowledged as one of history's finest physicists, reportedly battled feelings of inadequacy and self-doubt throughout his professional life.

Coaching others and myself
Over time, I learned to recognise and manage my own insecurities and self-doubt. As I started working more with my clients, I realised that I actually had a lot of valuable insights and experiences to share that could make a real difference in their lives. Helping others build confidence in their abilities and find clarity in their career goals, made me reflect on my own strengths and achievements. I started to recognise the unique value I brought to the table and how my own experiences and expertise could provide a learning platform for others.

In the process of coaching and understanding clients, I noticed patterns in their struggles and successes. I also gained a deeper understanding of the job market, the hiring process, and what employers seek in a candidate. I started to recognise the importance of lifelong learning, networking, personal branding, and possessing strong adaptive skills to ensure lifelong employability.

This newfound knowledge made me a better coach and opened the pathway towards gaining confidence as a professional coach. At the same time, I applied these insights and strategies to my own career, including proactively seeking out new opportunities to stretch myself beyond my comfort zone. For example, I enrolled in relevant online learnings to occupy my evenings, involving myself in volunteer work to widen my network and connecting and engaging with subject matter experts on LinkedIn.

Utilising coaching skills such as listening and asking questions, has increased my confidence through the positive feedback I received. Hearing kind words from clients who have found success in their careers after working with me has been incredibly rewarding. Knowing that I have played a key role with coaching has given me a sense of pride in my own abilities.

Empowering others to coach
Even though I am no longer working as a career coach, I am privileged to be involved with coaching in another meaningful way with NTUC LearningHub where together with my team, we provide upskilling opportunities to current and aspiring coaches, managers and leaders, equipping them to help others be better individuals in life and at the workplace.

Coaching has not only allowed me to help others achieve their career goals, but it has positively impacted my professional development and career. Through my work with coaching, I have gained a deeper appreciation of its benefits for others and myself. Most importantly, I have learned to recognise and appreciate my own strengths and achievements, which have all made me a more confident and empowered professional.

It’s Not About Being the Best, But the Best Version of Yourself

By Isa Nasser, Director of Consumer Sales at NTUC LearningHub

From a boy who was often disciplined for not focusing on his studies, Isa shares his journey from his schooling days, a conversation that changed his life, and how he never stops learning, even as an accomplished tech professional.

Didn’t do well for O-Levels
Growing up, I attended a neighbourhood school, where I was surrounded by many passionate teachers. As a child, I wasn't particularly excited about learning, and was often disciplined for not completing my revisions. However, with the encouragement of my teachers and mother, I managed to do well in school. The incredible support system helped me get into Victoria School – my first-choice secondary school.

Victoria School was known for its talented and high-calibre educators. Unfortunately, during my time there, I found myself unable to do well academically. The culprit? Gaming. I was distracted by a first-person shooting game that was released during my secondary school years. I became obsessed with it, and as a result, was unable to focus on my studies. Due to my poor ‘O’ Level results, I was not able to gain admission to the Junior College of my choice and was instead admitted to a local polytechnic.

At first, I felt disappointed and let down by my academic performance. Despite that, I chose to focus on the positives of polytechnic education, such as its vibrant campus life and hands-on learning experience. The course was not in vain, as I soon discovered my first passion in robotics and mechatronics. I worked hard, and it paid off. Back in those days, it was extremely difficult for someone from a polytechnic to gain admission to a local university, so when I was offered admission to the National University of Singapore (NUS), I was thrilled!

How a ‘C student’ inspired me
The transition to university, however, was a challenge. There was a gap between what I had learned in polytechnic and what was taught in university. At first, I felt that university was too demanding for me, and I wondered if I could even complete my degree.

But the direction of my entire life was transformed by a single, chance conversation.

To complete a particularly difficult C++ programming assignment, I sought the assistance of a friend enrolled in NUS' computer science programme. Afterwards, I asked him how well he had performed in his modules. His answer surprised me. While he scored well in most of his courses, he got Cs in some.

As a result, I began to wonder, "How can such a smart individual like him get Cs?" He explained to me that he studies harder for topics that interest him, and less for ones that do not. This strategy seemed like a terrible way to earn a degree. But the more I thought about it, the more I realised that there was more to it. Focusing on topics he was passionate about gave my friend an endless motivation and energy to learn.

I had an epiphany. I had been looking at my studies the wrong way. Instead of viewing courses as obstacles, I should have thought of them as knowledge brought to us by academic giants of the past. I needed to appreciate those past discoveries, put myself in the shoes of the inventors, and not take natural phenomena for granted. This change in mindset fuelled my future successes and taught me not to worry about failures.

With a renewed attitude and outlook on learning, I began to expand my knowledge beyond what was taught at university. I have, for example, used MATLAB to develop artificial intelligence that can tune electric motors on my own initiative, something beyond what was taught. Even though I was not the top student in my class, I found myself enriched with most knowledge during that semester.

I carried this attitude into my professional life as well. Having worked as an electrical engineer in an automation company for a number of years, I joined Ngee Ann Polytechnic as a lecturer. To make learning effective for young adults, I had to learn pedagogical design. I taught myself how to use the Unity game engine, and utilised these 3D environments to develop educational games.

Following my stint at the polytechnic, I worked at a Robotics and Automation training academy where I was able to design a course on Industry 4.0 for the Employment and Employability Institute (e2i) ULeap e-learning platform.

Receiving the Digital Training Transformation award from then NTUC Secretary-General Mr Chan Chun Sing

My team and I even won the Digital Training Transformation award, which I received from then NTUC Secretary-General Mr Chan Chun Sing. I reflected on how my gaming addiction, which impeded my studies then, was now the driving force behind my ability to create impactful games.

The skills I acquired at Ngee Ann Polytechnic and the Singapore Institute of Technology (University of Glasgow) as a lecturer, along with my coding expertise, enabled me to secure a position at NTUC LearningHub, a continuing education and training provider. Here I am able to utilise both my teaching and technical skills to help others upskill and pursue their interests in technology.

Discovering your interests through lifelong learning
Even today, I am always learning new skills, such as using Python to automate trades based on stock market data. I believe that one should never stop learning, and that the key to success is to find what interests you and dive deep into it. That's what I did, and it has led me to a fulfilling career and a lifetime of continuous learning.

My journey has been a testament to the importance of upskilling. It is not about being the best, but about being the best version of yourself. You should not be satisfied with what you already know and instead, always strive to learn more. And that's what I want to inspire others to do – never stop learning, growing, and challenging themselves.

Upskilling is more than just increasing your employability, it will increase your value as a person. It will enable you to develop the skills and knowledge necessary to create a meaningful and fulfilling life. So, I encourage everyone out there to take the time to explore their interests and find their passions. It's never too late to start, and the rewards are boundless.

How to Harness the Power of Emotional Intelligence at Work

What is Emotional Intelligence?

Emotional intelligence is about the ability to recognise, understand and manage our own emotions and the emotions of others. Daniel Goleman, a psychologist and author who first introduced and popularised the concept, identified that there are four key domains that make up emotional intelligence. They include self-awareness and self-regulation which deal with managing one’s personal emotions, as well as empathy and relationship management which relates to the emotions of others.

If you would like to have a deeper look into what emotional intelligence entails, these courses allow learners to understand the concept itself, how it differs from other forms of intelligence as well as some benefits associated with emotional intelligence .

Course Title: Using Emotional Intelligence: Introduction (Part 1 of 8)

Course Provider: BizLibrary

Course Type: Interactive

Course Title: Introduction to Emotional Intelligence

Course Provider: Talent Quest

Format: Interactive

Why is emotional intelligence important at the workplace?

Given the rise of cross functional teams and collaborative ways of work, emotional intelligence has become more essential in the workplace than ever before. Emotional intelligence can help you to better navigate through the myriad of exchanges and activities at work. For example, emotional intelligence can aid in resolving conflicts and decision-making by preventing judgement from being clouded or emotionally charged.

Emotional intelligence is a valuable skill which has vast impact on various facets of the workplace. It helps to build rapport with colleagues and business partners by improving one’s communication, collaborative, and relationship management skills. Emotional intelligence also improves negotiation and problem-solving skills which are important to achieving strong business outcomes.

For those in leadership or managerial positions, emotional intelligence plays an even greater role as these roles are essentially about managing people. An understanding of emotional intelligence enables leaders to better manage their emotions and that of the team. While most leaders tend to focus solely on the performance of the teams, leaders should cultivate better relationships and understand their team inside and out.

This helps to cultivate a psychologically safe environment at work and encourages team members to strive through adversity. With the conducive working environment and greater compassion towards the team, emotionally intelligent leaders can effectively improve employee retention as well.

How can one develop emotional intelligence?

Given the breadth and depth of the concept, improving all four pillars of emotional intelligence is key. We recommend the ‘Using Emotional Intelligence’ eight-part video series by BizLibrary as a starting point. Through this interactive course, learners can look forward to discovering various tools and tips to strategically develop all four facets of emotional intelligence.

1. Self-Awareness

Developing your self-awareness sets the foundation towards increasing emotional intelligence. It is the ability to identify and understand what triggers your emotions. At this stage, you should be asking yourself questions such as ‘What am I feeling’ and ‘Why am I feeling this way’. Penning down these emotions and underlying reason for the emotion experienced can help to boost your self-awareness. For more tips, ‘Improving Your Self Awareness’ by BizLibrary allows learners to understand themselves inside and out.

Course Title: Using Emotional Intelligence: Improving Your Self-Awareness (Part 2 of 8)

Course Provider: BizLibrary

Format: Interactive

2. Self-Regulation

Self-regulation refers to having the power to pause between feeling an emotion and reacting to it. This is an important aspect as it helps you to control disruptive emotions and impulses, thereby preventing rash decision making at work. One way to practice self-regulation is to explore techniques to release workplace stress such as taking up a new hobby or exercising. The interactive course by BizLibrary on ‘Improving Your Self-Management’ gives leaners a deeper insight into the different ways to practice emotion regulation.

Course Title: Using Emotional Intelligence: Improving Your Self-Management (Part 3 of 8)

Course Provider: BizLibrary

Format: Interactive

3. Empathy

The third domain to develop emotional intelligence is empathy which is the ability to sense the feelings of others, understand their perspectives and how you respond to them. To increase empathy and perspective taking, try engaging in active listening as you interact with others. This entails asking questions and providing feedback which helps you to pay more attention to both verbal and nonverbal communication. To find out more, ‘Improving Your Social Awareness’ and ‘Social Awareness Tools’ by BizLibrary provides useful tips and practices on how to develop greater empathy.

4. Relationship Management

Relationship management is the ability to read situations and modify your response, navigate conflict skilfully and communicate effectively. A widely used tool for enhancing empathy is the DISC assessment which provides insights into your personal behaviour when interacting with others. Here are some of the recommended courses on LHUB GO Infinity to help you build stronger work relationships and social skills.

The Agile methodology is a practice in the software industry which contains various frameworks for product development and teamwork. It is the ability to deal with change throughout a project, and overcome obstacles faced along the way.

As Agile has developed into a practice for a range of industries, from marketing to human resource, Agile is a flexible tool for any employee working in teams. It encourages people to take a human-based approach, by solving problems through collaboration and self-organisation. This would be especially helpful given the rise of cross-functional collaboration.

Why pick up Agile?

Agile encourages people to be productive and efficient through applying different frameworks such as Scrum or Feature-Driven Development to their own work. Being equipped with Agile also allows you to stand out from jobseekers or other colleagues by showing your ability to adapt and transition in the workplace. You can further set yourself apart by gaining industry-related Agile skills, such as Marketing or Business Agility.

The Agile methodology also helps in improving one’s self-organisation where employees can better manage their time and tasks. Methods such as the Kanban board, a popular software development methodology adopted by agile teams, works well for individuals as it motivates them to complete and move more tasks across the board. As work-from-home arrangements continue in many workplaces, it’s important to be mindful of time when approaching various tasks.

If you would like a preview of Agile, ‘Getting Flex-Agile’ by Symmetra and ‘Developing and Supporting an Agile Mind-set’ by Skillsoft are courses for prospective project managers or individuals who are looking to upskill in Agile. These courses give an overview of Agile and how to build an Agile mindset.

How does Agile benefit the workplace?

The Agile methodology has been on the rise for most businesses due the benefits of improving employee productivity. As businesses begin and continue to take up more collaborative ways of work, cross-functional projects are increasingly becoming a norm. Regardless of whether you are leading or contributing to these projects, Agile helps promote better team coordination to get the work done effectively and efficiently.

Focusing on project management, the Agile methodology can be applied to most forms of work through problem solving and teamwork. Employees are encouraged to be creative and contribute extensively to these projects, creating the best results possible. For example, quality-control and a step-by-step progress is carried out by everyone in the team, to ensure that there are reduced risks when the project is executed. By applying the Agile methodology at the workplace, teams will see continuous improvements in their work.

To find out more on how Agile can improve your way of work, ‘The Benefits of Agile Project Management’ by 365 Career and ‘Introduction to Agile Project Management’ by Mind Channel allows learners to understand the flexibility of Agile as a team, and how it can benefit them in the long run.

Azure Bot Services and NLP help developers create conversational AI applications more easily, and its deployment tools ensure a smooth move from trial runs to real-world use.

The Future of AI Solutions on Microsoft Azure

Azure continues to lead cloud AI by aligning its tools with real-world needs. Its platform supports advanced machine learning pipelines and integrates seamlessly with popular frameworks like PyTorch and TensorFlow.

Turning Raw Data into Actionable Insights: How Power BI Streamlines the Process

In today’s data-driven economy, businesses are operated in numbers, reports, and spreadsheets. But raw data on its own rarely tells a clear story. To make informed decisions, organisations need tools that can transform data into insights that are easy to understand and act upon.

Introduced by Microsoft, Power BI is one of the most widely adopted data analytics tools in Singapore and around the world. By combining powerful data visualisation capabilities with interactive dashboards and real-time reporting, it allows professionals to turn complex information into meaningful insights.

Whether you are a manager looking to track KPIs, an analyst aiming to present trends, or a business leader making strategic decisions, Power BI can provide the clarity you need.

Why Raw Data Needs Transformation

Raw data is often scattered across multiple sources—Excel sheets, databases, CRM systems, or cloud applications. Looking at rows and columns of numbers can be overwhelming and may even overshadow the insights hidden within.

Without visualisation and context, decision-makers may miss important patterns or rely on guesswork. Power BI bridges this gap by allowing users to clean, model, and visualise their data in a way that makes sense. Instead of static charts, it offers interactive dashboards that let you filter, drill down, and explore the story behind the numbers you gathered.

This transformation turns any sort of big data into actionable insights that drive productivity and smarter business strategies.

How Power BI Streamlines the Process

Power BI is designed to make data analysis accessible to everyone, not just IT specialists. Here are a few practical ways it simplifies the process of working with data:

Data Integration Across Multiple Sources

One of Power BI’s strengths is its ability to connect to a wide range of data sources. Whether you’re pulling data from Microsoft Excel, SQL databases, or third-party applications, Power BI brings everything together in a single view.

This integration eliminates the need for manual consolidation, saving time and reducing human-error.

Clear Visualisations and Dashboards

A key feature of Power BI is its intuitive visualisation tools. From heat maps to bar charts to real-time KPIs, users can customise how data is presented. This makes it easier to communicate findings with teams and stakeholders.

Visual storytelling is particularly powerful for presenting to non-technical audiences who need insights, not technical jargon.

How Microsoft Copilot Simplifies Your Everyday Tasks: Key Benefits and Uses

In today’s digital workplace, there are 3 non-negotiable factors that fuel business growth.

  • Time Management
  • Boosting productivity
  • Improving accuracy

All these are achievable goals when you have the right tools. To cater to the growing demand for AI tools that make workplace operations easy, Microsoft has stepped up with Copilot, a generative AI chatbot seamlessly integrated into familiar Microsoft 365 apps like Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint, and Teams.

By blending natural language processing (NLP) with workplace automation, Copilot makes everyday tasks smarter and simpler—whether you’re drafting reports, analysing data, or managing team communication.

In this guide, we will help you navigate how Microsoft 365 Copilot transforms work, its key benefits, and how you can learn to use it effectively.

What Is Microsoft Copilot?

In a nutshell, Microsoft Copilot is an AI assistant in Microsoft 365 that leverages large language models (LLMs) to understand natural language prompts and generate intelligent responses.

Unlike standalone AI tools, Copilot works inside the apps you already use daily, which makes workplace AI adoption smooth and intuitive.

For instance, instead of spending hours formatting slides, you can simply ask Copilot in PowerPoint to create a presentation draft based on a document. Or, in Excel, you can simply give a prompt to summarise monthly sales by region and highlight growth trends, and Copilot will instantly generate a chart and insights for you.

This integration makes Copilot less about replacing human effort and more about augmenting it—helping professionals focus on decision-making and creativity rather than attending to repetitive tasks.

Why Companies Should Consider Adopting Microsoft Copilot

Time-Saving Productivity Automation

One of the greatest advantages of Copilot is its ability to handle repetitive tasks quickly. From generating meeting summaries in Teams to drafting professional emails in Outlook, Copilot reduces manual work and helps you stay focused on higher-value activities.

Smarter Data Insights in Excel

For those who manage spreadsheets, using AI in Excel is a game-changer.

Copilot can:

  • Clean up raw data
  • Generate pivot tables
  • Explain trends in plain language

This is especially useful for professionals without advanced technical skills, as they can now get clear insights without relying on complex formulas.

Better Communication and Collaboration

In Word and Teams, Copilot simplifies all your hard work. It can engage in tasks like,

  • Writing
  • Editing
  • Brainstorming

It also can suggest improved sentence structures, generate agenda notes, or create concise summaries of long chats—making collaboration smoother across teams.

Enhanced Creativity in PowerPoint

Designing slides often takes up more time than preparing the content itself. Copilot allows users to generate layouts, insert relevant visuals, and structure talking points, all with a single prompt. This ensures that presentations are polished and engaging without going through the stress of formatting.

Workplace AI Adoption Made Simple

Unlike new standalone apps that require steep learning curves, MS 365 Copilot is built directly into the ecosystem professionals already know. This makes it easier for organisations to drive digital workplace transformation without disrupting existing workflows.

Practical Examples: How to Use Microsoft 365 Copilot

If you’re wondering how to use Copilot in Microsoft 365, here are some everyday scenarios:

  • In Outlook: Ask Copilot to draft responses to routine emails or create a summary of unread messages.
  • In Excel: Use it to analyse quarterly reports, highlight anomalies, or build charts with simple commands like “compare this year’s sales with last year’s.”
  • In Word: Generate a first draft of proposals, refine grammar, or adjust tone to sound more professional.
  • In Teams: Request a meeting recap with key action items so that everyone stays aligned.
  • In PowerPoint: Convert long Word documents into concise, visually appealing slide decks.

By learning how to use Microsoft 365 Copilot effectively, professionals can shift from manual execution to strategic thinking.

Why Structured Training Matters: Writing Effective Prompts

While Copilot is powerful, the quality of its output depends heavily on how you communicate with it. That’s where writing effective AI prompts comes in.

A vague prompt like “Make a report” may produce generic results, whereas a specific prompt such as “Summarise customer feedback from Q2 and provide three improvement suggestions in bullet points” ensures more accurate and useful outcomes.

Learning prompt design is therefore crucial for anyone who wants to get the most out of Copilot and truly simplify their work tasks.

NTUC LearningHub’s Microsoft Copilot Training in Singapore

For professionals seeking to master these skills, NTUC LearningHub offers a dedicated course: Craft Effective Prompts for Microsoft Copilot for Microsoft 365

This course is designed to help learners understand not just the technical features of Copilot, but also how to apply it meaningfully in their day-to-day work.

  • Prompt engineering: Develop the ability to craft clear, effective prompts that lead to smarter results.
  • Practical applications: Discover real-world scenarios to apply Copilot in streamlining workflows.
  • Confidence in adoption: Build the skills to fully leverage Copilot in MS365 and enhance productivity.

By the end of the course, learners will explore how to fully exploit Copilot in MS365 to simplify their work tasks—accelerating efficiency and fostering creativity.

Make Workplace Tasks a Breeze with Microsoft Copilot

As AI becomes an essential part of the modern workplace, Copilot stands out as a tool that blends seamlessly into daily workflows. With benefits like faster automation, smarter insights, and enhanced creativity, it helps professionals work smarter—not harder.

But to truly harness its potential, structured learning and training are essential. That’s why NTUC LearningHub’s Microsoft Copilot training in Singapore is an invaluable step for professionals ready to embrace the future of work.

Whether you’re managing data, leading teams, or crafting presentations, Microsoft 365 Copilot simplifies your everyday tasks—and with the right training, you’ll know exactly how to use it to your advantage.

Getting Back on the Road? Here’s Why Non-Active Drivers Should Consider a TDVL Refresher

If you’ve taken a break from driving a taxi in Singapore, whether for a few months or a few years, returning to the road isn’t as simple as turning the ignition key. The regulations and expectations for taxi drivers evolve regularly, and staying compliant with The Land Transport Authority (LTA) is crucial. If your taxi driver’s vocational licence (TDVL) has been inactive or you've accumulated navigational-related offences, you may be required to complete a TDVL refresher course to legally resume driving.

The good news? There’s a straightforward solution: the TDVL Refresher (Non-Active Driver) course offered by NTUC LearningHub. This LTA-approved taxi course helps you get back on track, meet vocational licence compliance requirements, and refresh your skills to rejoin Singapore’s public transport system with confidence.

Who Needs the TDVL Refresher Course?

If you’re a non-active driver or have been flagged for navigational offences, you’ll likely fall under LTA’s criteria for mandatory professional driver retraining. The LTA requires TDVL holders to attend a TDVL refresher course every six years to maintain their vocational licence, especially if their service record indicates long periods of inactivity or serious infractions.

This refresher course isn’t just a formality—it’s part of a broader effort to ensure all public service vehicle (PSV) drivers remain up to date with the latest road safety rules, passenger service standards, and professional conduct expectations.

You are required to attend the refresher course if:

  • You fall under the service record criteria set by LTA as a non-active driver.
  • You’ve committed navigational-related or service-related offences. For example, you have charged a passenger a ride-hail fare more than the ride-hail fare last published by the ride-hail service licensee for ride-hail service.

What Does the TDVL Refresher (Non-Active Driver) Course Cover?

The TDVL Refresher course for non-active drivers in Singapore, offered by NTUC LearningHub is a 5-hour programme that covers essential updates, regulations, and conduct guidelines relevant to the taxi industry. There’s no formal assessment, but attendance is mandatory.

Here’s an overview of what you’ll learn:

  • Regulatory Updates: Latest LTA and Road Traffic rules, PDPA compliance, and proper installation of IVRDs in vehicles.
  • Driver Conduct: Expectations for both general and on-road behaviour, smoking regulations, and maintaining privacy for passengers.
  • Penalty Frameworks: Understanding the Driver Improvement Points System (DIPS) and Vocational Licence Points System (VLPS)—including offences that can lead to suspension or revocation.
  • Customer Service & Safety: Emphasising principles of safety, comfort, and professionalism while transporting passengers.

These modules serve as a comprehensive re-introduction to your responsibilities and rights as a taxi driver. The proceeding section will elaborate further on why this course helps you re-engage with your profession in a competent and compliant manner.

Benefits of Taking the TDVL Refresher (Non-Active Driver) Course

For drivers returning to the road after a period of inactivity, staying updated with regulations, customer service standards, and compliance requirements is not just useful—it’s essential. The TDVL refresher course offered by NTUC LearningHub is more than a box to tick for licence renewal; it’s a comprehensive re-orientation that helps non-active drivers regain confidence, update their knowledge, and re-enter the industry as competent and compliant professionals.

Here’s why this course is particularly beneficial if you’ve been away from driving for a while:

1. Refresh Your Regulatory Knowledge

If you’ve been off the road, there’s a good chance you’ve missed several updates in LTA rules and road traffic regulations. The course covers the latest laws, ensuring that you won’t unknowingly violate rules that have changed since you last drove. This includes:

  • Licensing of drivers and the scope of Public Service Vehicles (PSVs)
  • New regulations on the installation of IVRDs in PSVs
  • Latest updates to the Vocational Licence Points System (VLPS) and Driver Improvement Points System (DIPS)

This course will provide you with a comprehensive foundation on safe food preparation practices and foodborne disease prevention.

2. Reduce the Risk of Offences and Penalties

Non-active drivers may be unfamiliar with newer penalties that could result in the suspension or revocation of their licence. This course highlights:

  • The full structure and impact of DIPS and VLPS
  • What constitutes inconsiderate or careless driving
  • Penalties for offences such as smoking in the vehicle or improper use of mobile devices
  • Key offences and scheduled penalties under LTA’s vocational guidelines

By understanding these frameworks, you'll be better equipped to avoid costly or career-threatening mistakes.

3. Stay Compliant with Passenger Privacy Laws

One of the more recent focuses in vocational driving is data protection and passenger privacy. The refresher course dedicates time to:

  • Explaining PDPA guidelines in the context of driver conduct
  • Highlighting the proper use and installation of in-vehicle monitoring systems
  • Teaching drivers how to balance safety and surveillance without infringing on passenger rights

If you’ve been away from the industry, this is especially important, as privacy expectations and legal consequences have become stricter in recent years.

4. Relearn Safe and Professional Driving Practices

Even the most seasoned drivers can develop rusty habits over time. The TDVL refresher course is a great way to get back to basics and review best practices that ensure both safety and professionalism on the road. Topics covered include:

  • General and on-road driver conduct
  • Principles of safety and comfort for both drivers and passengers
  • Customer service training based on key service principles
  • Proper installation of audio and visual equipment in the vehicle

Emphasis on courteous, patient, and responsible behaviour, which is especially important in Singapore’s service-oriented public transport sector

5. Realign with Industry Expectations and Service Standards

The public transport landscape in Singapore is highly regulated and competitive. This course helps reintegrate non-active drivers by reintroducing:

  • The importance of professional image and service conduct
  • Updates on expected behaviour and service levels under PSV rules
  • Practical insights into road usage, passenger handling, and vehicle cleanliness

In short, it provides a refresher not just on driving but on what it means to be a trusted, professional taxi driver in today’s Singapore.

6. A Confidence Boost for Returning Drivers

Returning to work after a long break can feel overwhelming, especially when regulations and standards have evolved. The TDVL refresher course is structured to ease you back into the system. There is no final assessment, and it only requires five hours of your time, yet the benefits in renewed confidence, knowledge, and career readiness are significant.

Whether you’ve stepped away from driving to pursue another career, take care of personal matters, or due to changes in the industry, this course offers a simple yet effective way to pick up where you left off, only better informed.

Why the ECC Certificate is Crucial for Facility and Site Hygiene Compliance

Maintaining high standards of hygiene in buildings and public areas is now necessary rather than discretionary in a post-pandemic world where public health and cleanliness are more crucial than ever. This is where the role of an Environmental Control Coordinator (ECC) comes in. Tasked with upholding hygiene protocols and preventing environmental health risks, ECCs have become a vital part of Singapore’s workforce.

Whether you manage a facility, work in construction, or are looking to boost your career in environmental health and safety, obtaining an ECC certificate through recognised environmental control coordinator training is a smart move. This blog explores why earning a certificate for ECC in Singapore matters now more than ever, and how NTUC LearningHub can help you get there.

What Is the ECC Certificate and Who Needs It?

The ECC certificate is a professional qualification that empowers individuals to manage and enforce hygiene standards in high-risk environments such as construction sites, markets, shopping malls, and dormitories. In Singapore, the National Environment Agency (NEA) mandates the appointment of ECCs at various types of premises as part of their environmental public health framework.

If you're aiming for a role in environmental health and safety, especially in sectors such as construction, facilities management, or industrial operations, this certification is often a mandatory ECC certification requirement.

In short, if your job involves managing cleanliness, sanitation, or pest control in shared public or private spaces, becoming a certified ECC is more than just a good idea; it’s a necessity.

The Rising Importance of Facility Hygiene Compliance

Facility hygiene isn’t just about keeping things clean; it’s about protecting people from preventable health hazards like pest infestations, poor sanitation, and cross-contamination. In densely populated environments, these risks can quickly spiral out of control.

Here’s where ECCs play a critical role. Equipped with knowledge from a comprehensive environmental control coordinator training, they implement effective workplace sanitation practices, conduct environmental inspection protocols, and coordinate pest management training efforts to prevent outbreaks.

As Singapore tightens its grip on public health regulation, ECCs are now seen as essential gatekeepers of community wellness and safety.

Key Learning Outcomes from NTUC LearningHub’s ECC Course

NTUC LearningHub’s Environmental Control Coordinator training course in Singapore offers practical instruction for individuals seeking to become certified ECCs. This NEA-certified ECC course equips learners with the technical knowledge and real-world skills necessary to carry out the duties of an ECC effectively.

Here's what you can expect to learn:

  • Overview of NEA regulations and ECC responsibilities
  • Environmental health and safety concepts
  • Personal hygiene, sanitation, and cleaning standards
  • Pest and vector control officer training
  • Incident response and reporting
  • Waste management procedures
  • How to carry out environmental inspection protocols
  • Compliance with public health legislation

By the end of the course, learners will be prepared to oversee hygiene compliance on-site and support teams in executing rigorous health and sanitation plans.

Who Should Take This Course?

The ECC course is ideal for:

  • Site supervisors in construction or maintenance roles
  • Facilities managers and building management teams
  • Food centre and hawker centre operators
  • Dormitory managers
  • Anyone involved in environmental services or health & safety compliance

Even if you're new to the field, NTUC LearningHub offers online ECC classes to accommodate working professionals or those seeking to shift into a new role. This flexibility makes it easy to upskill without putting your career on pause.

From Learning to Licensing: The ECC Certificate Path

Upon successful completion of the course, learners receive a recognised ECC certificate that qualifies them to apply for an ECC licence application through the NEA. This official designation allows them to serve as an Environmental Control Coordinator for various premises, fulfilling regulatory compliance obligations.

This certification not only opens doors to new roles, but also demonstrates your commitment to upholding public health and hygiene standards, a credential that is becoming increasingly valuable in Singapore’s evolving health and safety landscape.

Benefits of Being a Certified ECC

1. In-Demand Skills

The need for hygiene and environmental health and safety oversight is only increasing. Certified ECCs are in demand across multiple sectors, including the ECC course for construction sites, dormitories, and food-related businesses.

2. Career Advancement

Many professionals view the ECC certification as a stepping stone toward broader roles in health and safety management. It can pave the way to supervisory roles or even senior positions in compliance and risk management.

3. Community Impact

Being an ECC is more than just a job. It’s about safeguarding the well-being of workers, residents, and the wider community. You'll play a direct role in preventing disease outbreaks and maintaining facility hygiene compliance.

Course Format and Flexibility

To cater to busy professionals, NTUC LearningHub’s ECC course is delivered through a mix of classroom instruction and online ECC classes. Learners benefit from a structured programme that is both accessible and aligned with NEA standards.

Build a Safer Future, One Facility at a Time

In Singapore, where health and hygiene are tightly woven into national policy, the role of an ECC has never been more critical. With the rise of high-density urban spaces and more stringent public health regulations, the demand for trained professionals who can ensure workplace sanitation practices and environmental health, and safety is only growing.

PDVL Renewal Made Simple: Your SkillsFuture-Friendly Refresher Course Guide

Operating as a private chauffeur in Singapore comes with the responsibility of driving safely and adhering to LTA (Land Transport Authority) regulations. One way of meeting this standard is by maintaining a valid vocational licence. The PDVL refresher course for private hire drivers in Singapore ensures you remain compliant with the Land Transport Authority’s (LTA) regulations while staying updated with evolving industry standards. Furthermore, it is an important requirement when renewing your vocational licence. If you’re looking for a refresher course for PDVL, NTUC LearningHub offers an LTA-approved course that ensures you’re up-to-date with all the latest regulatory standards.

PDVL Renewal Process in a Nutshell

To continue operating legally in Singapore, you must renew your vocational licence every three years from the date of issuance. The Land Transport Authority (LTA) typically sends a renewal notice 2.5 months before your licence expires—but don’t wait till it’s too late. Staying ahead with your renewal requirements ensures uninterrupted driving eligibility.

Whether you hold a PDVL or a Taxi Driver’s Vocational Licence (TDVL), renewal involves meeting a set of essential criteria, including taking the PDVL Refresher course.

If you’ve received a refresher course notice from LTA, this means it’s mandatory for you to complete a 3-hour refresher course to renew your licence.

This must be completed once every 6 years.

The course updates you on essential topics such as road conduct, the Driver Improvement Points System (DIPS), and the Vocational Licence Points System (VLPS) offences.

It also ensures you are compliant with evolving LTA regulations, making you a safer and more professional driver.

Apart from attending a refresher course, there are 2 other steps you will need to take to ensure a successful admission for an LTA licence renewal.

You will need to:

  1. Submit Your Application: Log in to the GoBusiness Licensing portal using Singpass and apply for the PDVL. Upload your documents and pay the $40 non-refundable fee.
  2. Undergo Medical Screening: Once approved, visit any clinic of your choice for a full medical check-up and chest x-ray, certified by a registered practitioner and radiologist.

When planning to apply for a renewal, ensure you meet the updated eligibility criteria:

  • Singapore Citizen
  • At least 30 years old
  • Valid Class 3/3A/3C/3CA Singapore driving licence held continuously for at least 1 year

Documents Required:

  • NRIC
  • Driving Licence
  • English Proficiency Certificate
  • Passport-sized photo
  • Credit card for application payment

Why Compliance Matters: Your Guide to Food Hygiene Certification in Singapore

As maintaining the highest standards of basic food hygiene is non-negotiable in Singapore’s F&B industry, obtaining an NEA-approved food safety certification is a necessity for food handlers who want to meet the mandatory food safety and hygiene requirements.

NTUC LearningHub’s  food safety training offers a range of comprehensive modules covering food handling to legislation with an assessment at the end of the session. Read on to learn more about the process of getting a food hygiene certification, its importance and career benefits.

Food Safety Course Level 1: Where Your Journey Begins

If you have heard about the mass food poisoning incidents through catering services in recent years, it is no surprise that obtaining a food service worker certification is now a legal requirement and a stamp of approval to enhance your operation’s reputation.

From July 2023 onwards, to prevent foodborne illnesses, all F&B workers at establishments licensed by the Singapore Food Agency (SFA) must pass the WSQ Food Safety Course Level 1 from a licensed training provider such as NTUC LearningHub. This food handling training will not only equip employees with knowledge of kitchen hygiene standards and HACCP awareness but also strengthen the customers’ trust and minimise public health risks in the long run.

What Is the Food Safety Course Level 1?

The Food Safety Course Level 1 is a NEA-approved course, offered by NTUC LearningHub. Candidates have to cover six hours of lessons led by an experienced instructor. Once the modules are complete, the next step is a 1.5-hour assessment, designed to gauge both your written knowledge and practical skills.

Who Needs to Follow a Food Safety and Hygiene Course in Singapore?

Anyone working in food establishments needs to obtain this qualification, from chefs to hawker stall staff and bartenders. To be eligible, prospective candidates must:

  • Be well-versed in English and basic numeracy (WPN Level 4).
  • Follow the strict dress code during the in-person assessment: no open-toe shoes, accessories or nail polish, long hair should be tied back, fingernails trimmed and clean.
  • 100% attendance must be maintained in both the modules and assessment sessions.

By meeting these requirements, you will be well prepared before entering the programme and competent enough to complete the assessments.

Curriculum Highlights: Course Format and Topics

The total duration of NTUC LearningHub’s food safety and hygiene course is 7.5 hours with 6 hours dedicated to training and 1.5 hours the written and practical assessment.

The key topics covered include:

  • Personal Hygiene: Tips to prevent cross contamination by maintaining cleanliness.
  • Safe Ingredient Use: Ways to ensure ingredients are handled hygienically and stored correctly.
  • Food Handling Training: Learn methods to cook, cool and reheat food safely.
  • Food Storage: Understanding safe storage practices including temperature control.
  • Equipment and Premises Cleanliness: Get to know proper kitchen sanitation and pest control measures.
  • Legislation and Case Studies: Learn food hygiene regulations in Singapore, including case studies and HACCP awareness.

This course will provide you with a comprehensive foundation on safe food preparation practices and foodborne disease prevention.

Training to Certification: How to Earn Your Food Hygiene Certification?

After completing the modules, you will need to sit for the written and practical assessments which consist of MCQs, short-answer questions and practical demonstrations. All these are marked to a high standard and once you have successfully passed the exams, you will receive a Statement of Attainment (SOA) from SkillsFuture Singapore (SSG), which counts as an industry-recognised food hygiene certification.

Legal Mandate and Career Benefits of a Food Safety Certification in Singapore

More than just paperwork, this certification is a necessity for food handlers in all NEA-licensed establishments. Furthermore, with a validity of 5 years, a refresher course needs to be taken at five-year intervals to stay updated on the current food safety and hygiene requirements.

For most individuals, having a food safety certification is their golden ticket towards boosting their employability and career progression across the F&B sector. This is also a benefit for employers as it demonstrates commitment to consumer wellbeing while ensuring compliance with food hygiene regulations in Singapore.

How to Register via NTUC LearningHub?

NTUC LearningHub offers the Food Safety Course Level 1 through approved training partners under SSG’s guidelines. Fees vary based on individual or company sponsorship as well as the partial subsidies available through SSG for eligible Singaporean and PR participants.

The Food and Beverage (F&B) industry in Singapore is an important aspect of the country’s economy, culture, and social framework. From hawker centres that reflect the country’s unique multicultural background to high-end restaurants that provide world-class dishes, the industry provides a diverse range of culinary options for any type of palate. Singapore’s F&B industry is dynamic, driven by changing customer demands, globalisation, and technology improvements, making it an ideal environment for professional advancement and innovation.

This article explores the benefits of joining the F&B sector in Singapore and the numerous career pathways available.

Understanding Singapore’s F&B Industry

Singapore’s F&B industry is a major contributor to its economy. According to 2023 reports, the industry employed more than 220,000 people and represented around 1.1% of the nation’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP). With a wide range of entities, including hawker stalls, casual dining restaurants, cafes, pubs, fast-food outlets, and fine dining places, it is a foodie’s paradise, attracting both locals and tourists.

Furthermore, the F&B industry in Singapore is strictly regulated to maintain food safety and hygiene, creating a professional and well-structured atmosphere for prospective employees. As Singapore continues to develop as a global culinary hub, the F&B industry is expanding rapidly, creating countless job opportunities across various levels and functions. Let’s take a  look at different career pathways and opportunities available in this dynamic industry.

1. Culinary Arts

The culinary profession, which provides a variety of professional prospects for people with a passion for food preparation and cooking, is at the centre of the F&B industry. The culinary arts offer a path for technical proficiency and creative expression for anybody in the industry, from line cooks to executive chefs.

  • Chef: Aspiring chefs can start their careers as commis chefs (junior chefs) and work their way up to positions like sous chefs and head chefs. Chefs oversee menu development, food preparation, and guarantee the overall quality of the meals provided. Chefs in Singapore have the option to work in a variety of venues from diners to Michelin-starred restaurants.
  • Pastry Chefs: Pastry chefs are experts in making baked products and desserts. With the rising popularity of bakeries and cafés, there is a high demand for talented pastry chefs who can make creative desserts that appeal to both local and foreign palates.

Chefs in Singapore have the unique benefit of learning and perfecting a variety of cuisines, including traditional Chinese, Malay, and Indian dishes as well as modern European and fusion cuisine.

2. Restaurant and Kitchen Management

While chefs play an important role in the kitchen, the success of any food and beverage organisation is also dependent on excellent leadership and management. Restaurant and kitchen management positions are ideal for people with strong organisational and leadership skills.

  • Restaurant Manager: A restaurant manager is in charge of the restaurant’s day-to-day operations, ensuring that customers are satisfied, staff are well-managed, and the business works smoothly. This position demands leadership, communication, and problem-solving abilities, as well as a thorough understanding of customer service and hospitality.
  • Kitchen Manager: Kitchen managers supervise kitchen operations, manage inventories, order supplies, and ensure food safety and hygiene standards are met. They collaborate closely with the head chef to streamline workflow and ensure that everything runs smoothly.

Restaurant and kitchen managers can advance to higher executive positions, such as area managers or operations directors, as they gain expertise and a comprehensive understanding of the industry.

3. Front-of-House Careers

The front-of-house staff is crucial in shaping the client experience, and individuals who enjoy interacting with others will find a variety of professions that provide both personal fulfilment and career advancement.

  • Waiters and Waitresses: They are the restaurant’s front-of-house representatives, collecting orders, serving food, and assuring customer satisfaction. Though commonly regarded as an entry-level employment, skilled waiters can move to supervisory positions or even become managers.
  • Bartenders: Bartenders mix and serve beverages while also providing a welcome environment for customers. Bartending is a highly specialised occupation, especially in high-end bars or cocktail lounges, where creativity and mixology knowledge can enhance the drinking experience.
  • Sommeliers: Sommeliers specialise in wine service and assist customers in selecting the ideal wine to complement their meal. This position demands a thorough awareness of wines, including their origins, flavour profiles, and food pairings. Becoming a sommelier often involves formal certification and training, making it a coveted career in the food and beverage industry.

4. Catering and Event Management

Catering and event management is another interesting part of the food and beverage industry, with the opportunity to work in a variety of settings, including corporate events, weddings, and huge social gatherings.

  • Catering Managers: Catering managers monitor the planning, preparation, and delivery of food for events. They collaborate closely with clients to ensure that the menu and service fulfil their expectations, as well as manage the logistics of food preparation and delivery. This position necessitates excellent organisational abilities, attention to detail, and the ability to manage numerous projects at once.
  • Event Coordinators: Event coordinators collaborate with F&B providers to ensure that food and beverages are smoothly integrated into the overall event experience. This function includes creating menus, collaborating with chefs and catering companies, and ensuring that the event functions successfully from beginning to end.

Catering and event management can lead to chances in large hospitality groups or specialist event management organisations, which provide flexibility and variety in work environments.

Benefits of Joining the Food Services Sector

One of the main advantages of working in Singapore’s food services business is career stability and prospects for advancement, owing to government initiatives such as the Progressive Wage Model (PWM). The Government of Singapore launched the PWM to help lower-paid workers by providing clear paths for career advancement through skill development, productivity gains, and compensation increases.

Beginning in March 2023, the Progressive Wage Model was extended to the food services industry, providing structured wage growth and advancement for full-time workers in low-paid professions such as cooks, kitchen assistants, and service personnel. This ensures that as employees gain skills and experience, they can advance up the career ladder while receiving regular compensation increases. This initiative motivates those starting at the entry level to learn new skills, take on more responsibility, and eventually progress to higher-paying roles.

The key benefits of the PWM in food services are as follows:

  • Structured Wage Progression: Employees can expect consistent salary increases based on skill acquisition and job responsibilities.
  • Upskilling Opportunities: Employees are encouraged to constantly upgrade their abilities through training and certification programmes, which can lead to advancement.
  • Job Security and Recognition: The model recognises jobs in the food service industry, giving employees the respect and job security they deserve.

The PWM makes working in the food services industry a rewarding long-term career decision, especially for people who are passionate about food and customer service.

The Versatility of Singapore's Retail Industry: What Roles Can You Pursue?

Singapore’s retail sector is a cornerstone of the country’s economy, reflecting its vibrant cultural diversity, international influences, and evolving consumer behaviours. With the rapid growth of e-commerce and retail innovations, the industry continues to expand, offering a broad range of career opportunities for aspiring individuals across various skill levels. In this blog article, we will help you navigate through the retail industry of Singapore, shedding light on various job roles it offers, their relevance to the Progressive Wage Model (PWM), and the pathway to enhance your skills to excel in your career prospects.

The Rise of Singapore’s Retail Sector and Its Relation to the PWM

Shaped by digital transformation and global trends, Singapore’s retail sector has undergone many significant changes over the years. In fact, it has become an ever-evolving industry that encompasses everything from luxury brands to everyday goods. With increasingly changing consumer demands and the integration of e-commerce, retail workers are expected to be adaptable, skilled, and service-oriented to fit in the current job market. This, in turn, has opened many pathways and opportunities supported by frameworks such as the PWM, encouraging retail workers to upskill, reskill, and advance their careers.

The PWM for the retail sector is designed to ensure that workers at all levels have access to steady wage growth, training, and career progression. It is applicable to all Singapore citizens and permanent residents engaged in full-time or part-time retail jobs. The PWM secures employment, uplifts wages, and helps workers build sustainable and rewarding careers.

Job Diversity in the Industry and the Roles Eligible for the PWM

The retail industry of Singapore offers a wide array of job roles, each with its unique set of responsibilities and growth potential. These roles are also structured under the PWM in five tiers, clearing the pathway for retail workers to progress.

  • Retail Manager: As the leader of a retail establishment, Retail Managers are responsible for overseeing daily operations, managing staff, and ensuring customer satisfaction. They play an important role in strategising and improving sales performance, customer service, and profitability. Those who would like to promote themselves to the role of a Retail Manager can enrol in Workforce Skills Qualification (WSQ) training modules, such as Problem Identification L3 and Service Leadership L4.
  • Retail Supervisor: The Retail Supervisor works closely with both management and staff, acting as a bridge between the two. They are in charge of supervising store employees, handling stock, and ensuring smooth operations. Their ability to manage a team and maintain high standards of customer service is key to the store’s success. If you are an Assistant Retail Supervisor looking to upgrade your job role to a Retail Supervisor, you can follow the WSQ training modules, such as Problem Identification L3, Service Challenges L1, Customer Relationship Management Operations L2, and Service Coaching L3.
  • Assistant Retail Supervisor: An Assistant Retail Supervisor supports the Retail Supervisor by ensuring that staff members are fulfilling their duties effectively. This role often involves a mix of operational tasks, customer service, and team coordination. In the PWM ladder, the role of an Assistant Retail Supervisor is the third tier, and Senior Retail Assistants and Senior Cashiers expecting a promotion can follow WSQ modules such as Customer Loyalty L2, Customer Relationship Management Operations L2, Service Challenges L1, and Service Coaching L3 to get there.
  • Senior Retail Assistant/ Senior Cashier: With greater experience, the Senior Retail Assistant and Senior Cashier take on advanced responsibilities within their respective areas. The Senior Retail Assistant mentors newer staff, ensuring they are familiar with store policies and procedures while handling more complex customer queries and managing inventory. Meanwhile, the Senior Cashier oversees the cash registers and supports other cashiers, ensuring accuracy in transactions, resolving payment issues, and delivering excellent customer service. Both these positions belong to the same tier when it comes to the PWM, and retail workers are expected to complete WSQ modules, such as Customer Relationship Management Operations L2, Customer Loyalty L2, and Adapt to Change L1 to become eligible for this position.
  • Retail Assistant/ Cashier: The Retail Assistant and Cashier are key front-line roles in the retail sector. Retail Assistants help customers find products, manage stock, and maintain the store's organisation, playing an essential part in creating a positive shopping experience. Cashiers, on the other hand, are responsible for processing transactions quickly and accurately, ensuring smooth and efficient checkouts. If you are newly joining the retail sector, you can follow the following WSQ modules to gain the essential knowledge and skills required,

How Does the Retail Sector Benefit from the PWM?

The Progressive Wage Model in Singapore, introduced by the Tripartite Cluster for Retail, offers significant benefits to retail workers. It ensures that employees earn gross wages that align with their skills and responsibilities while also providing opportunities for wage increases as they gain experience and training. The PWM also lays out a clear progression pathway, allowing workers to advance in their careers while improving their wages and skills. While the retail sector of the country is on a steady ride towards various advancements, the PWM has become the backbone of wage and skill development, providing retail workers with a structured pathway with better job security.
