Coffee Barista Course Overview

In this programme, learners will be introduced to the background of coffee, its usage and maintenance of coffee machines that builds the required knowledge on the coffee foundation. With the foundation knowledge established, the programme will then introduce them to the hands-on topics such as preparing and serving espresso. Through the building of the base product such as espresso and how that could affect the quality of the other coffee types that are created based on it. The programme will enhance their knowledge about coffee, its origins, handling and brewing of a specialty coffee. It is designed for a participant who has the interest to learn about specialty coffee. The programme will also promote opportunities for the general public to pursue a career in the Food Service industry.

Course Objectives

Upon completion of this course, you will be able to:

  • Recommend coffee products to others
  • Know origins and characteristics of coffee beans from different regions
  • Maintain coffee machines in accordance with organisational procedure and recipes, food and workplace safety and health requirements
  • Know legislative requirements
  • Preparation for brewing coffee

Pre-requisites

These are the admission requirement:

  • To be able to read and write English at a proficiency level equivalent to ES WS level 4
  • To  be able communicate information effectively and work in a team
  • To be able to plan and organise resources and activities to complete work activities within timeframes
  • Has basic technology knowledge (eg. Know how to serve the web and has email address)

Coffee Barista Course Outline

LU 1 Overview of Coffee

  • Establish knowledge on the background of coffee to its operations
  • Methods of processing coffee beans

LU 2 Specialty Coffee Grinding and Brewing Methods

  • Discuss the specialty coffee grinding and brewing methods
  • Setting up equipment for brewing specialty coffee
  • Grinding coffee beans to desired degree of fineness

LU 3 Preparing and Serving espresso

  • Prepare and serve espresso
  • Types and uses of tools and equipment for espresso

LU 4 Preparing and Serving cafe latte and cappuccinos

  • Prepare and serve cafe latte and cappuccinos
  • Types and uses of tools and equipment for latte and cappuccinos

LU 5 Equipment Safety and Maintenance

  • Maintenance of coffee-making equipment
  • Types, characteristics, functions and quality indicators of ingredients used to brew specialty coffees
  • Legislative requirements

LU 6 Selling Coffee

  • Recommendation and selling of coffee

Certificate Obtained and Conferred by

Statement of Attainment (SOA) from SkillsFuture Singapore (SSG)

  • Certificate of completion from NTUC LearningHub

Upon meeting at least 75% attendance and passing the assessment(s), participants will receive a Certificate of Completion from NTUC LearningHub.

Funding Eligibility Criteria:

Company Sponsored Trainee

  • Singapore Citizens or Singapore Permanent Residents
  • From 1 October 2023, attendance-taking for SkillsFuture Singapore's (SSG) funded courses must be done digitally via the Singpass App. This applies to both physical and synchronous e-learning courses

  • Trainee must pass all prescribed tests / assessments, and attain 100% competency
  • NTUC LearningHub reserves the right to claw back the funded amount from trainee if he/she did not meet the eligibility criteria
  • Singapore Citizens or Singapore Permanent Residents

SkillsFuture Credit: 

  • Eligible Singapore Citizens can use their SkillsFuture Credit to offset course fee payable after funding.

UTAP: 

  • This course is eligible for Union Training Assistance Programme (UTAP).
  • NTUC members can enjoy up to 50% funding (capped at $250 per year) under UTAP. 

PSEA: 

  • To check for Post-Secondary Education Account (PSEA) eligibility for this course, visit:

Absentee Payroll (AP) Funding: 

  • $4.50 per hour, capped at $100,000 per enterprise per calendar year.
  • AP funding will be computed based on the actual number of training hours attended by the trainee.
  • Note: Courses / Modules under Professional Conversion Programme (PCP) will not be eligible for AP funding claim.
