John Kotter Change Leadership & Management Masterclass
NTUC LearningHub is proud to partner Employment and Employability Institute (e2i) to bring in Kotter International‘s Change Leadership & Management Masterclasses to professionals in Singapore.
Dr. John Kotter set out in 1972 to answer the question: What makes transformational change efforts succeed or fail? Over the decades, he studied hundreds of organisations. His empirical research revealed eight common elements that are universally present across all successful transformations. The Kotter 8-Step Process for Leading Change was born, followed by Kotter International to translate the research to impact.
Kotter works with organisations to help them overcome the barriers to leading complex change. With decades of real-world research honed in the field alongside our partners, we expertly guide and convert the energy of your greatest asset—your people— into action, momentum and results.
Kotter has offices in Cambridge, MA and Seattle, WA in the United States and employees based across Europe and India.
“Leadership is about setting a direction. It’s about creating a vision, empowering and inspiring people to want to achieve the vision, and enabling them to do so with energy and speed through an effective strategy. In its most basic sense, leadership is about mobilising a group of people to jump into a better future.” – John Kotter

Learn More About Our Masterclasses
1. Change Essential Programme
Today we expect leaders at all levels to deliver results under conditions of increasing change and uncertainty. However, many feel unprepared and ill-equipped to lead change. In this program, you first learn the components of Dr. Kotter’s 8 Steps for Successful Change and four Critical Leadership Principles that must be in place to ensure successful change. Second, you explore and practice how to get and keep people on board and supporting change: you learn the definition of true urgency and how to build and maintain it in your own context.
How to Build a Foundation for Successful Change
You will learn about the rates and causes of failure for change in organisations and explore the essential elements of successful change: the research-based 8 Steps for Successful Change and the four Critical Leadership Principles. Leveraging the results of your own Change Appraisal, you will study implementation practices and build a customised tactics guide and action plan for use in executing change in your organisation.
How to Ignite Urgency for Change
You will explore how to get and keep people bought in to and actively supporting a change by learning what true urgency looks like and what leaders of change need to do to build, communicate and maintain it. You will learn to adapt your own “change style” to people’s different communication needs as a way to build buy-in across a range of personalities. Applying the principles for building urgency, you will work with different types to establish momentum for an idea or a current change initiative. Focus areas include how to gather support, how to identify who must be urgent, and how to develop messages that both appeal to all styles and rise above the din of competing messages.
Learning Outcomes
As a result of this experience, you will be able to:
- Explain the 8 Steps for Successful Change and related core leadership principles
- Apply core principles of effective change to your own situation and identify ways to enhance its success
- Recognise the behaviours that occur when people are on board, bought in and actively supporting a change
- More effectively engage others in change by addressing their diverse needs
- Apply tactics to increase urgency and active support for a change
- You will leave with tips, tools, and a plan to build success for your change
2. Buy In Programme
Getting support for your ideas can be difficult in an organisation when natural obstacles exist in the structure or culture. You want to advance an initiative for the betterment of your company but know that you must first lower peoples’ intentional or unintentional resistance to new concepts. Backing from others is essential. The method for gaining buy-in taught in this program is counterintuitive. You learn the advantages of walking into the fray, showing respect for all, and applying well prepared tactics to build the support — even advocacy — necessary to launch and deliver on your innovation.
Taking the Barriers Down
Participants learn the four core types of barriers in the context of a compelling story and how dismantling them effectively, rather than trying to go around them, is a path to success for the heroes of the story.
Gaining Support
Armed with the examples from the story, participants examine their own initiatives in light of the need for support from others. They prepare a plan to develop effective responses for potential challenges to its successful implementation. Each participant pairs with another to provide mutual support, advice and feedback for securing buy-in and implementing their initiatives both during and after the session.
Learning Outcomes
As a result of this experience, you will be able to:
- Apply leadership competencies in influence, communication, collaboration, strategic thinking and decision making
- Evaluate how much buy-in has already been achieved, how much more is needed and from whom for their initiatives
- Create a step-by-step plan for advancing initiatives through building the necessary support
- Apply tactics to increase buy-in and active support for their initiatives
- Gain the experience needed to apply this blueprint to advancing future ideas or initiatives
- Participants leave with tips, tools, and a plan to build success for their initiatives
