The Perform Rigger and Signalman Tasks Course is aimed at providing you with the knowledge and skills to prepare and to tie the load for safe lifting by any form of lifting equipment using correct and clear signals to guide the crane operator in the manoeuvring of a load safely to its destination.

Pre-requisites

You must be above 18 years of age and are assumed to:

  • Have a basic knowledge of the relevant sector of work
  • Be able to listen and speak English at a proficiency level equivalent to the Employability Skills (ES) level 2
  • Be able to read and write English at a proficiency level equivalent to ES level 2
  • Be able to manipulate numbers at a proficiency level equivalent to ES level 2; and
  • Be medically fit

Please note:

  • Safety shoes and proper attire (no singlet/ shorts/ bermudas) are COMPULSORY for all
  • 100% attendance is required

Course Outline

CE 1: Prepare to perform rigger and signalman tasks

  • Participate in risk assessment and lifting plan briefing for lifting operations as a rigger
  • Identify risks of lifting operation related to rigger and signalman at work site
  • Ascertain weight of loads
  • Determine the Centre of Gravity of regular and irregular loads
  • Conduct pre-lift inspection of the crane, lifting gear and accessories
  • Select appropriate rigging equipment, lifting gears and accessories for lifting the load
  • Check the serviceability of communication equipment and radio
  • Set up communications equipment and radio channels for safe lifting operations
  • Practice good housekeeping of communication equipment, crane lifting gear and accessories
  • Report any abnormalities/ defects in the crane, lifting gear, accessories and communication equipment according to standard operating procedures

CE 2: Perform rigger and signalman tasks

  • Observe and apply safety practices and hazard work site when carrying out rigger and signalman tasks
  • Identify hazards related to lifting operations
  • Use of PPE and tag line to carry out rigger and signalman tasks
  • Select and use appropriate slinging method, rigging equipment, lifting gears and accessories on load
  • Check to ensure an adequate number of lifting gears to lift the load
  • Apply rigging techniques to load
  • Verify that load is properly rigged
  • Apply 3-step lifting and lowering method
  • Direct load to destination with safe lifting techniques
  • Communicate lifting instructions using standard hand and voice signals
  • Check for blind spots and estimate clearance of swing path

CE 3: Reinstate rigger and signalman work area

  • Dismantle rigging equipment, lifting gears and accessories
  • Carry out housekeeping of equipment and work area
  • Carry out post-operational checks on communication equipment, crane lifting gear and accessories
  • Report any damage and defects on communication equipment, crane, lifting gear and accessories

Certificate Obtained and Conferred by

  • A Statement of Attainment (SOA) will be issued by SSG for those who have been assessed as Competent.
  • Safety Pass will also be issued
